The other slight issue here is that the story of Patrick's evolution into an anarchist just isn't as interesting as the story of 'The English Patient'. Once inside, he bumps into the visionary city chief engineer, who is sleeping there to protect his installation, and is persuaded to rest … and sleep. Alice lay beside Patrick’s exhausted body, her tongue on his neck, recognizing the taste of him, knowing the dyers’ wives would never taste or smell their husbands again in such a way; even if they removed all pigment and course salt crystal, the men would smell still of the angel they wrestled with in the well, in the pit. Immersed in the lives of the people who surround him - the immigrants building the city, as well as those who dreamed it into being - Patrick begins to learn, from their stories, the history of the city itself. For some reason, I always choose to read a complex or very “literary” type of novel on what turn out to be my busiest weeks.

As in other novels, Ondaatje presents an intriguing set of characters who fight the good fight of life and arouse our sympathy when they are inevitably crushed by harshness of this cruel world. The hero of the book is Patrick Lewis, an explosives expert who nurses a broken heart among the immigrant Macedonians and Finns. He is accepted into the neighborhood and is invited by Kosta, a fellow dynamiter, to a gathering at the Waterworks—a place where various nationalities gather for secret political discussions and entertainment. Ondaatje uncovers the story of those whose labour created Toronto landmarks in the early twentieth century, deftly knitting up truth and myth, revealing the lives of those who were forgotten in the official version of history.

He has two children and is the brother of philanthropist, businessman, and author Christopher Ondaatje. But I'm really sick of IMPORTANT LITERARY FICTION in Canada and really, really sick of IMPORTANT LITERARY FICTION's dominance of the Canadian literary scene. One night, when a group of lost nuns walks on the bridge, one of them falls off and Nicholas saves her, though everyone believes that the nun has disappeared forever. I’m starting to develop a guilty conscience for not liking books like this more, because there is nothing wrong with being stylized or poetic, so I can understand why Ondaatje’s writing appeals to some people. The last third is too contrived for me, but the bulk of this occasionally and inspiringly ecstatic novel is a wonder to read. The novel lets us see the birth of Toronto through the eyes of the immigrant construction workers that built it.

Exquisite and musical, In the Skin of a Lion is a novel that challenges the boundary between history and myth. Alice shows up at his door almost three years after Clara has left, and finds Patrick still heart-broken over Clara. I thought I might have found the trick of it - you can see how Berger uses the heroic present of the workers' struggle, and the eternal present of the erotic, to make the ideological feel somehow absolute. Many times I’ve been asked whether I think I am embarking on a journey that will lead me to a useless degree. Before the real city could be seen it had to be imagined, the way rumours and tall tales were a kind of charting. When they finally understand what he’s been saying, he cries from the emotion of letting people into his lonely world.
