And how do I write a review for this book that will do it justice? So cleverly written, and readers will delight in figuring out one by one who each of the “players” in the game are — many of which are characters from Victorian literature. Even though this was my fourth or more go-round with these characters, I stayed up late to experience the novel’s unique ending all over again. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read — not just one of the best fantasy or science-fiction books. Want proof? My three children, then teenagers, listened to it twice on car trips, lapping up every word, eager to hear what was to come next. Now that’s magic! Counterpart Artifacts: The wands, of which one can only be used to Open and the other only to Close.

This was my first book from this narrator and he does a great job. His different voices are well done, particularly the Things. His dogs sound like you would expect a dog to sound. As do his cat, squirrel, rat, owl, bat, and snake. His humans and those who aren't necessarily human but are humanoid, are also excellent. He understands the nature of the book itself, which is vital to get Zelazny right. The main reason that this didn’t get a full 5 stars is the very abrupt end. I thought there would be an epilogue of sorts and there isn’t. I really wanted to know what happened to a few of the other characters but it is left to my own imagination. A Night in the Lonesome October was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1994. [2] A similar theme of conflict surrounding the opening of a gate to another world exists in Zelazny's 1981 novel Madwand. First of all, and the narration was brilliant. All of the voices were distinct, believable, and very well acted. And the moral of this rererereread is: Bubo is the best fictional rat ever. Because I said so. Just ask Snuff and Graymalk if you don't believe me.

My first reading of this was a wonderful surprise. I knew of Roger Zelazny, thanks to his classic Fantasy Amber series and his great SF tales ( Home is the Hangman, …. And Call Me Conrad, Lord of Light), but this is one I didn’t know much about until our Oracle of the Occult Randy Money pointed it out a couple of Octobers ago. It has been out of print here in the UK for years but is now available, thanks to Farrago Books, and is worth hunting out and read during the days leading down to 31st of October. WE WERE OUT AGAIN LAST NIGHT IN PURSUIT of more ingredients for the Great Work. It was very foggy, and there were many patrolman about. This did not stop us, but it made things more difficult. The master's blade flashed, the woman screamed, and there was a rending of garments. We passed the Great Detective in our flight, and I inadvertently tripped his companion, whose limp had lessened his ability to avoid onrushing canines. And the moral of this rererereread is: Snuff's How to Perfect Your Idiot Slobbering Hound Expression 101 Class should be mandatory for all canine companions, methinks. l’ho seguito. Ha portato il suo bottino in una grande fattoria a sud di qui – un posto pieno di pali della luce, sopra il quale infuria una tempesta perenne. Ha consegnato il materiale a un uomo alto e longilineo, chiamandolo 'Buon Dottore'. " How many times have I read Roger Zelazny’s A Night in the Lonesome October? I literally can’t remember if it’s four or five or six. And it never loses its freshness or excitement.

This book provides examples of:

Sono tre notti che un ometto gobbo saccheggia i cimiteri. L'ho visto durante i miei pattugliamenti. Due notti fa, grazie al plenilunio,

The Audible description is really good. It's difficult to write a good description that doesn't give away everything. Zelazny had a great skill in his writing and his use of language, puns, turns of phrase, style, etc are perfect. It feels like it is a dog speaking to you. It's very well done. And having once spent several hours talking to Roger Zelazny and enjoying his delightful sense of humor, I can absolutely attestthat this book is an excellent representative of his power over the English language. Must Be Invited: Discussed when Needle the bat is being hunted and asks Snuff for sanctuary. Needle says that it applies to the Count, but not to himself because he's not a vampire, just a bat. This is a book that if not handled correctly could collapse under the weight of its seemingly silly premise. The basic concept being that a variety of famous literary figures, movie monsters, and historical figures are somehow all playing a mysterious game, with the proceedings being narrated, diary style, by a dog. New rating: 5 stars. Does that mean there might be hope for me yet? Oh dear. We are all doomed, methinks. In an October in the late 19th century, a small English village finds itself host to an eclectic group of visitors. They are players in the Game, and on the final night of the month they will declare their allegiances and take sides in a contest that will determine the future of the world. Until then, there are mystic artifacts to locate, rituals to complete, potential allies to court or enemies to incapacitate (cautiously — for appearances can deceive, and a person whose allegiance seems obvious may be working for the other side, or may indeed not be a Player at all). Not to mention complications to deal with, including a mysterious American with an interest in botany, a famous detective with his suspicions roused, and a Player aiming to grab power through methods even his (or her?) allies might balk at...City of Gold: In the Dreamlands, even the trash cans are made of semiprecious stone and fine ceramics. I was delighted to easily get this library book this year, as I have a notion to make it an annual event. I was musing about purchasing my own copy and came to realize that the edition with the wonderful James Warhola illustration is out of print. I am very disappointed, but I will make the rounds of book sales and second hand shops and cross my fingers. The cover of the more recent edition is very bland by contrast.
