The lighters we tested ranged from 0.39-3.21 oz. That isn’t terribly heavy in the grand scheme of things, but relatively speaking the heaviest lighter weighs over 8 times as much as the lightest. Most pipe lighters are butane sparkweel lighters. Sometimes butane torch lighters are also called pipe lighters because the intense flame can be easily directed into a pipe. But should you truly need a weather-resistant lighter, the UCO Stormproof Torch is your best option. When I was a kid, “lighter” meant a Zippo or disposable Bic lighter. Now, there are many types of lighters, including types with multiple flames, electric ignition, and different fuels. While neither truly windproof nor waterproof like UCO’s incredible stormproof matches, this lighter was the most wind- and water-resistant that we tested.

In a pinch, you can also use other fuels in a Zippo lighter, including butane, naptha (also called white gas or Coleman fuel), or gasoline. So from an emotional standpoint the Zippo lighter trumps all the other lighters. However it has quite a few downsides. Upsides Its wind-resistance isn’t anything to write home about — it was pretty easy to blow out — but it was the best lighter we tested in this regard, just edging out the competition. BICs and Clippers come pre-filled. The other three lighters we tested come empty and you must fill them with the appropriate fuel, which you also must buy. Also called jet lighters, turbo lighters, or cigar lighters, butane torch lighters contain butane stored in a pressurized chamber. The fuel is forced through a nozzle with air, creating a very intense, strong, and hot flame. They are basically like mini Bunsen burners. Here’s what you need to know about types of lighters, pros and cons, and what the best lighter is for your needs. What Makes One Lighter Different than Another? Pipes can be difficult to light with traditional lighters; the flame can burn your fingers when you turn it upside down towards the pipe.

Like a lot of gear items in hiking you can buy lighters for any purpose. Fancy Zippo lighters that appeal to the bushcraft community or the mini BIC lighters that are for the UltraLight hiking community. All lighters have a primary function. Being able to create fire. Now, I don’t mean this lighter doesn’t light consistently. It does. The Zippo was the third most reliable lighter in that regard, lighting 175 out of 200 times. When submerged with the cap on, the inside of the lighter remained completely dry and lit immediately after shaking off the excess water. As marketed, the case is waterproof. The Mini BIC is also decently water-resistant. After performing 3 “Soak Tests” with it — submerging the lighter in water, shaking it out, and then trying to light it in 1-minute intervals — it took an average of 2 minutes before it started lighting again consistently.

I lit each lighter and then tried to blow it out, starting by blowing lightly and getting progressively more forceful . It was an admittedly crude test. Unless you need a highly weather-resistant lighter such as the UCO Stormproof Torch, I’d recommend you go with a flint lighter. The Wayfinder Lighter from UST, like the UCO Torch, is a butane lighter with piezo-electric ignition.
