In dialogue with my work on pesticides is an interest in corporate social responsibility and philanthrocapitalism in South Asia, and the ways in which private businesses and foundations engage in health and social development and environmental protection activities. Funded by ESRC and DfID, I have explored the role of private enterprise in war/post-war transitions in Sri Lanka and Myanmar, coining the phrase ‘philanthronationalism’ to explain the partnerships that have emerged between private philanthropy and nationalist movements in those countries. I obtained my PhD in anthropology from the London School of Economics in 2009, and have since held research fellowships at Brunel, Sussex, and Durham, I am currently a Visiting Fellow at Brunel and the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka. Widger used her leading role to set precedents for herself and others in the firm: “It’s not that you balance things out – I think you blend them. I became much more transparent: I would put into my calendar if there was a school sports day and I’d say that’s where I am and made no apology for it.
