Later, things picked up a little as Elettra, Vianello and Claudia become more involved in the off-the-books investigation, but in the end the denouement didn’t convince and relied on what I thought was some pretty thin psychology. Terrific at providing, through its weary but engaging protagonist, a strong sense of the moral quandaries inherent in Italian society and culture.

I have read one or two in this series before and so had some vague knowledge of the characters, however, you don’t really need to have read any of this series before there’s enough character info included to get the picture. I am very much drawn to the strong moral compass that governs Commissiaro Brunetti but also throughly enjoy time with his family and the description of the delicious meals they enjoy. If this makes the books sound somewhat muddled or confused then I can only assure you that they don’t read this way. Obviously, good detectives spend a lot of time interviewing people so necessarily there's a lot of dialog. An annual blessing, a fine series—one of the finest (see what I mean) in the mystery (or any) genre .

Donna Leon lived in Italy for many years, and although she now lives in Switzerland, she often visits Venice. However, when his friend's daughter's place of work is vandalized, Brunetti asks his own favors--that his colleagues Claudia Griffoni, Lorenzo Vianello, and Signorina Elettra Zorzi assist his private investigation, which soon enough turns official as they uncover the dark and Janus-faced nature of a venerable Italian institution.

I think it would have been much more interesting to read about Venice during the pandemic, as it would have made great contrast to the usual descriptions of the city, plagued by tourists. Brunetti takes a look and finds little: one client is an optician, another Fenzo`s father-in-law, whom he helped establish a charity, another the owner of a restaurant.Six chapters and 50 pages and the first situation is not set up what with everyone pausing to look out the window with their fingers to their throats! Leon’s long-running series, he’s had to deal with all sorts of ambitious and untrustworthy types, chief of which is the “ever-helpful” Lt.

It’s a small matter and she’s certainly not reporting something that would normally involve the police, it’s just that she’s worried that her son-in-law may be experiencing some troubles and would Guido mind digging around a bit and hopefully set her mind at rest.Foscarini's son-in-law, Enrico Fenzo, has alarmed his wife (her daughter) by confessing their family might be in danger because of something he's involved with.
