The concept of hygge is an integral part of Danish culture and is reflected in the country’s folk art, which is designed to bring comfort, warmth and a sense of homeliness to everyday life. Norwegian folk art The longships were also versatile, each end was designed similarly, which minimized the effort of ever needing to turn a boat around, furthermore, the boat’s draft was shallow, enabling it to be on shallow waters. There were varying types of longships and made from different types of wood depending on the area of construction. The Sámi are the indigenous people to Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, with their own culture and language – and their own art. The Nordic Museum beautifully presents more than 500 years of Nordic life. Exhibits include fashion and textiles, furniture and interiors, china and table settings, folk art, jewelry, photography, trends, and traditions. There are also exhibits on the history and lifestyle of the indigenous Sami people, as well as a thought-provoking exhibit on the impact of environmental changes in the Arctic. The Borre style became prominent in other areas not only restricted to Scandinavia, for example, the British Isles and Baltic areas like Russia.Textile Arts: Fiber / textile arts have a long tradition in Scandinavian folk art. Embroidery textiles, weaving, and tapestry work are common techniques used to create intricate designs and patterns on clothing, area rugs, wall hangings and other textiles.

Now that you know about some of Norway’s most famous artists, you need to know where you can see their (and other) famous artworks in person. There is a wide variety of art museums all over Norway, but here is a selection of our favourites: Scandinavian folk art is known for its distinctive and rich visual style. While there are variations across different regions and time periods, here are some common elements found in Scandinavian folk art: Folk art from Scandinavia also draws heavily from fables and allegories. As an example, the vintage carpet above, on the left, shows the story of Nils Holgersson, a folk tale about a badly behaved boy who is cursed by a Tomte, or Swedish elf, and is shrunken to only inches tall. Naturalism was a significant influence on Christian Krohg’s art, and the majority of his paintings are detailed depictions of people performing everyday tasks. Oda Krohg studied art under both Erik Werenskiold and Christian Krohg before marrying the latter. Close to Stavanger is “ Eventyrskogen” (The Fairytale Forest), which is a forest full of creatures from Norwegian fairy tales – and is probably the closest you’ll get to encountering a real troll in Norway (a tame one at least). Norwegian street artViking Art occurred during the period of the Viking Age, between 793 and 1066 CE. During this period, when the Vikings invaded other parts of Europe, there was a rise in the dissemination of Viking artwork as well as influences from other countries like England and Ireland. Viking Art is categorized into six dominant styles to emphasize the evolution of the distinct Viking designs seen on their wood carvings and other items like chests, jewelry, as well as runic stones. The most iconic symbol of Swedish folk art is the Dalahäst or Dala horse, so called because it originated in the Dalarna region of Sweden.

Bauhaus was a school in Germany that was famous for combining fine arts, crafts and technology; industrial and product design were highly regarded. The “Foundation Year” of many of today’s art and design schools has its origins here. It’s also where the field of modern furniture design started to take shape.

What distinguishes Scandinavian art from Scandinavian folk art?

In Iceland, one of the key aspects of folk art is its folk music. Although not something you can see in a museum, Icelandic folk music is one of the most important forms of folk art in Iceland. While art today tends to be created purely to be admired, Viking art seemed to have been used to decorate functional objects. For example, doors were embellished with carvings, ship posts were whittled into the shape of animal heads, and even earspoons were embellished. A silver Viking earspoon from Sweden. Image: Swedish History Museum The machine age was drastically changing living conditions, and the seeming futility and catastrophic loss of life from the First World War raised questions about the state of human morality. The world was changing, and this change was manifested in cinema, exhibitions, books and buildings for the public to soak up. Scandinavia Early On

Johan: As I have always been interested in creating, painting, sketching, drawing and working with my own hands I gradually developed my own thoughts about the way other artists in the past have acted to solve their tasks. Folk art was not an issue for me in my early career. For ten years I made much research and wrote books and articles on the applied art of the renaissance and baroque styles. The Dalahäst is a carved wooden horse that comes in a variety of sizes and colours, though the original colour was red – it’s a very similar red to the one found on classic Swedish houses. Rosemaling (Norwegian): Rosemaling is a decorative painting style that originated in Norway. It features intricate floral designs and scrollwork painted in vibrant colors.Scandinavian design has evolved with the times, moving from mostly furniture and product design to an application of principles and processes to current problems and opportunities. Its change has been just as dramatic as the society it’s a part of. The center hosts around ten different exhibitions a year, and is also home to its own collection of Sami artwork, ranging from duodji to more contemporary pieces. Best Norwegian sculpture parks The other Nordic countries also have their folk art traditions with recognisable styles and designs. Finnish folk art But there are distinct features that typify the folk art of each of the Scandinavian countries. Swedish folk art Aleklippa (Swedish): Aleklippa is a Swedish term for the decorative paper cuttings often found in Scandinavian and Swedish folk art. These intricate designs are made by cutting patterns into paper or thin materials.
