She first met David Blakely in mid-1953 at a club called Carrolls Club. After a few weeks, Blakely became her lover and moved into her flat above the club. Ellis admitted that she knew that Blakely was engaged to another woman and that she was still married. Emerald Emma! When you fired that revolver at close range into the body of David Blakely, what did you intend to do? The Times newspaper, 21 June 1955. David Blakely’s hard drinking was only matched by Ruth Ellis. Within two weeks of meeting, they were living together. But Ruth Ellis realised that Blakely’s family would not be prepared to accept her as a future Mrs. Blakely. They would have viewed it as a disgrace that their public-educated son would marry a drinking club hostess. In 1953, Ruth became the manager of the Little Club, a nightclub in Knightsbridge. At this time, she was lavished with expensive gifts by admirers and had a number of celebrity friends. [6] Ellis met David Blakely, three years her junior, through racing driver Mike Hawthorn. Blakely was a former public school boy who was educated at Shrewsbury School and Sandhurst, but was also a hard-drinking racer. Within weeks, he moved into Ruth's flat above the club despite being engaged to another woman, Mary Dawson. Ruth became pregnant for a fourth time but had her second abortion, feeling she could not reciprocate the level of commitment Blakely showed towards their relationship. [9] Olivia Munn puts on a busty display in a very plunging bright red swimsuit as she teases fans while sipping on a can of soda Diana Dors, who had starred in Lady Godiva Rides Again, in which Ellis had a minor, uncredited role, played a character resembling (though not based on) Ellis in the 1956 British film Yield to the Night, directed by J. Lee Thompson. [36] [37]Ruth's former husband, George Ellis, died by suicide by hanging at a Jersey hotel on 2 August 1958. [31] In 1969, Ellis's mother, Bertha Neilson, was found unconscious in a gas-filled room in her flat in Hemel Hempstead; she never fully recovered and did not speak coherently again. In 1980, the third episode of the first series of the ITV drama series Lady Killers recreated the court case, with Ellis played by Georgina Hale. On 15 July 1955, two days after Ellis’ execution, the Daily Mirror started a readers’ poll “Should the death penalty be abolished?”. The paper didn’t seem interested in its readers’ opinion eight months earlier when Styllou Christofi was executed. Ruth's case caused widespread controversy at the time, evoking exceptionally intense press and public interest to the point that it was discussed by the Cabinet. [25] Then- Prime Minister Anthony Eden made no reference to the case in his memoirs, nor is there any mention in his papers. He accepted that the decision was the responsibility of the Home Secretary, but there are indications that he was troubled by it. [26] A petition to the Home Office asking for clemency was signed by 50,000 people, but was rejected. [27] Next Tuesday, nearly 50 years after Ellis walked to the gallows, Jakubait will be at the royal courts of justice in London to see the court of appeal re-open her sister's case.
