The long novel Wolf Hall, about HenryVIII's minister Thomas Cromwell, was published in 2009 to critical acclaim. But much of Mantel’s glorious power comes from her unsentimental, forensic gaze and willingness to describe the uncomfortable, whether it’s dysfunctional friendship and pushy mothers in An Experiment in Love, acidic observations about the Duchess of Cambridge, or uncompromising descriptions of Tudor life in Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies. They found the same intensity of activity in dopamine-rich areas of the brains as found in the brains of couples who were newly in love. The books were adapted into plays by the Royal Shakespeare Company and were produced as a mini-series by BBC. The contours of Mantel's experience may be discerned in certain of her novels, such as Eight Months on Ghazzah Street (1988), which maps the story of Frances Shore, a wife marooned in the fundamentalist, misogynistic deserts of Saudi Arabia where, again, the rules don't apply.

The condition, and what was at the time a necessary treatment – a surgical menopause at the age of 27 – left her unable to have children and continued to disrupt her life. You say they give trivial messages,” she observes to her steely assistant Colette, “but that’s because they’re trivial people. It is Hunter who is the monster, able to live only among dead things, his narrative given in a hungry present tense.
