Description

I bought this primarily for playing racing and flight sims primarily wanting something with a wider field of view than my 32 inch 4k monitor. So far I love the monitor, setup was simple enough, works great with both my windows PC and my M1 MacBook pro. The MacBook will only allow me to set the correct resolution 5120 X 1440 through the display port on my doc, it doesn’t work correctly via thunderbolt which isn’t a huge deal but the KVM switch only works between my windows pc and Mac via the thunderbird bolt port so I’ll be trying to work around that little issue. VA panels typically have great contrast, however, the AG493UCX2 has an advertised contrast of 3000:1. It wasn’t until I calibrated the display that I was able to reach this figure, which reinforces my opinion that the factory calibration could have been much better. It should be noted that the previous model had much better contrast, so this could just be a one-off, but I can only review based on what’s in front of me. This provides you with plenty of horizontal screen space that’s especially useful for audio/video editing and productivity work. Moreover, you get an extended field of viewing in compatible video games for a more immersive gaming experience! Although this is still an improvement over the previous model, a lot of minor niggles remain, which when added together make this harder to recommend. Source switching and startup are painfully slow, motion handling isn’t great, and you only really get the best out of this monitor over DisplayPort, which stops this being the one screen to rule them all. Even the lowest level of High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature poses a significant upgrade to common monitors. The peak luminance of 400 cd/m² enables your display to hone the picture quality with a manifold colour spectrum and more diverse contrast. The VESA-certificate ensures richness of detail and realistic portrayals of game and film worlds.

Curved design wraps around you putting you at the center of the action and provides an immersive gaming experience. Information of the number of pixels in a unit of length. With the decrease of the display size and the increase of its resolution, the pixel density increases. The warm colour temperature preset is closest to 6500K at 7400K, but it’s a little cooler than I prefer. Colour accuracy is good, however, with an average DeltaE of 0.68 (0.44 calibrated) in sRGB mode (brightness cannot be adjusted in sRGB mode, but the default is a usable 218 cd/m²). The saturation is excellent, with no over or under-saturation of colours, giving images a very natural appearance. I’ve been using a lot of displays recently with massive gamut coverage, so it did look a little flat at first, but once I had time to adjust I came to appreciate the more natural appearance. As with the old model, the AG493UCX2 is excellent when used with DisplayPort, but there are too many limitations if that is not going to be your primary display connection. First off this monitor is impressive and probably a 5/5 for most Windows users. For us Mac folks.. getting 5K feels like bait and switch, however. It took some time to figure out how to get the full 5120x1440 resolution to work on a Mac.. but i got it working!! FYI - Apple support told me this would not work without an AMD chip set but turns out they were either wrong or didn't interpreter their won documentation as i did. Dimensions, weight and color Information about the dimensions and the weight of the specific model with and without stand as well as the colors, in which it is offered to the market. Width On a positive note, PBP (picture by picture) mode now lets you adjust brightness and contrast without having to switch to single-source mode to make adjustments. It’s a very welcome and significant improvement. The monitor is based on a 49″ 5120×1440 super-ultrawide panel, which is basically equivalent to two 27″ 2560×1440 monitors put side by side, just without the bezels in between them!

The screen has a moderate 1800R curvature for added immersion and a light matte anti-glare coating that prevents reflections without making the image too grainy.

Price comparison

There’s a good variety of ports on the AG493UCX2: There are 3x HDMI 2.0, 1x DisplayPort 1.4 and 1x USB-C for connecting your displays (USB-C supports the display signal and up to 65W power delivery, as well as supporting KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) if you have your peripherals connected to the display). I am looking at getting my first ultrawide monitor ever and am planning to immediately go up to 32:9, because ... why the hell not??? No, seriously, I want to replace multiple monitors with this and use it for gaming (nothing hardcore, mostly singleplayer stuff) as well as general productivity, where that aspect ratio seems like a good solution.

To eliminate stutter and tearing, both models support Adaptive-Sync. They are certified with VESA DisplayHDR 400, decoding and displaying high dynamic range with richer colours (89% AdobeRGB, 91% DCI-P3 and 120% sRGB gamut coverage2 for AG493UCX2), suited for content creation. To deliver on all fronts, both models are also equipped with massive and sturdy metal stands with 100 mm height as well as tilt and swivel adjustments. Two 5W speakers in both models also create a rich stereo sound stage. The panel in the AOC AGON AG493UCX2 has 10bit colour depth (8bit+frc), allowing it to display up to 1.07 billion colours, with decent gamut coverage: Overall, what most people are saying seems to hold true. The monitor is VERY nice to look at and use, with a few hiccups and humps to work over.

Overview

A pixel response time of 1ms means speed without the smear for an enhanced experience. Fast-moving action and dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the effects of ghosting.

The timing of this review was fortuitous as we had just finished our evaluation of the 43-inch gaming display. Information about the maximum horizontal viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality. Another constant niggle I had was when switching display inputs, as it takes a painfully long time to switch, often in excess of 12 seconds. I also had issues with the AG493UCX2 not switching on automatically with an HDMI source. It can take over 20 seconds to activate the screen from standby (compared to 1 to 3 seconds with most other AOC panels), which makes it frustrating when it doesn’t turn on at all, as you have to wait just in case it’s dragging its heels. If the USB setting on the monitor is set to USB 3.2, the max refresh of USB-C is limited to 5120×1440 @ 60Hz or 2560×1440 @ 60Hz in PBP.

From the Manufacturer

Consoles work perfectly when using PBP, but HDR cannot be used in PBP mode, and there is also no HDR compatibility at all in USB-C (DP alt mode). Given the issues I had with HDMI-connected consoles, I’d have preferred they kept two DisplayPorts and two HDMIs, though in reality users are more likely to have additional devices with HDMI outputs rather than a second desktop with DP. Another interesting feature, which is hidden in the ‘Eco Mode’ along with some other presets (Movie, Game, Sports, etc.) is the Uniformity Mode – it improves brightness and color temperature uniformity across the screen at a cost of overall picture brightness and contrast ratio.
