Description

In line with Isherwood's other works, descriptions are light and airy rather than overdone to the point that they become meaningless, and they allow the story to continue easily. The long-awaited second instalment in Samantha Shannon's Sunday Times and New York Times-bestselling series Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory. I can smell it whenever I think about it, so it made me laugh to read that it was a special Sunday meal for prisoners in 1930s Berlin.

One of the characters, a German aristocrat, Baron Pregnitz, is quite clearly gay, but Isherwood is much more vague about Bradshaw’s sexuality. So many wonderful books to discover, all vying for our time and attention – if only we had enough time in which to read them. Overall the experience seemed to me like life scene viewed though the eyes of a third person observer, who was there on the spot but detached from it all. I had such a good time with this novel, and I really hope you enjoy it too – it strikes me as being right up your street. The book made him a hero of gay liberation and a national celebrity all over again but now in his true, political and personal identity. The bestselling LGBTQ+ graphic novel about life, love, and everything that happens in between: this is the fifth volume of the Heartstopper series. The novel's last words are drawn from a postcard that Mr Norris sends to William from Rio de Janeiro: " What have I done to deserve all this? As he gets to know Bradshaw, Norris reveals a little of his childhood and the years he spent travelling around Europe with his adoring mother prior to her death.

Mr Norris's specialist interest involves oculoplastic (eyelid), lacrimal (watery eye / tear duct) and orbital (eye socket) surgery. He had just finished his eighth, he told us: it dealt with the amours peculiar to a winter sport hotel. Isherwood evokes the Berlin of the early 1930s as the Nazis are on the rise but are opposed by others, particularly the Communists. After his brusque self-introduction, he proved most affable and treated us, without further request, to a discourse on his career, aims, and methods of work. First Edition thus, with coloured frontispiece and 7 fine coloured plates (one double-page); patterned brown and yellow cloth, gilt back, brown top, brown endpapers, a near fine copy in publisher's board slip-case. It is indeed tragic to see how, even in these days, a clever and unscrupulous liar can deceive millions.
