With its compact size and easily retractable legs, it might make a good option for the beach as long as you can drive it there, as at 29kg, it's probably a little heavy to carry. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag. If you think you'll be making pizza regularly and have the garden to accommodate one, a larger pizza oven might be the best option for you.

You can opt to heat the oven using wood or charcoal for that authentic chargrilled taste, or you can enjoy the even consistency of gas cooking. This 18-inch charcoal kettle barbecue is ideal for cooking up a storm for your nearest and dearest this summer, whether you want classic BBQ grub or an authentic pizza. Barbecue-top pizza ovens involve a base, a hood and sometimes a converter that goes over your regular barbecue. This type of cooking outdoors is soaring in popularity and that is very much down to their extraordinary taste. It is a little on the heavy side at 30kg, so not the best for travelling, but there's no denying the authentic feel of that crackling wood and our finished pizza was restaurant-quality.The oven consistently made moreish 10in pizzas with the stone drawing out enough moisture from the dough to give a nice crisp base and chewy crust to each one. Producing a pizza oven was obviously a natural progression for this Danish manufacturer, which established its reputation making high-end bio fireplaces and has drawn on this expertise to come up with the gas-powered turtle. Setting it up was almost as effortless, and once we had inserted the stone, plugged in the rotating base (you'll need an outdoor power source for this) and attached the gas hose, the oven was ready to be lit. Add to that the versatility to roast joints of meat and even bake or smoke foods, and this really is an excellent bit of kit with endless cooking possibilities, and a great multi-functional oven if that's what you're looking for.

It also has a boost setting, which comes in handy to maintain the temperature when the door is opened to turn your pizza, which you will still need to do. Although, it’s actually still a sizeable piece of kit, with the dimensions of a traditional Neapolitan oven. The most important thing is heat – can it reach the correct temperature (usually around 500C) fast enough? There’s a temperature gauge on the side, so you can keep an eye on the heat, plus a handy baffle in the chimney that helps you control the draw of air through the oven for faster or slower cooking. At the same time, the roof of the oven helps to direct the heat to the topping to flash cook it, so there’s no risk of the base burning while the topping is left raw.At 20kg, it’s one for the car rather than carrying, but it will guarantee that wherever you pitch up, pizza perfection isn’t too far away. A pizza oven can be a great addition to any home, especially for those who love to cook and entertain. The portable Ooni pizza oven will heat up to 500°C in around 15 minutes and can make a 14-inch stone-baked pizza in just 60 seconds.

We used our basic pizza dough recipe to test the ovens and used manufacturers instructions around fuel. Finally, go for a metal oven if you’re planning on doing more speedy cooking over a shorter period, as although they tend to heat up quicker, they are less effective at retaining heat. Whilst you won't be able to cook with gas and wood at the same time, we feel the two fuel-types are ideal for different situations.

Getting the oven going takes a bit of practice, but it's is a serene ritual, and it takes no longer than heating a normal oven: you make a fire using a firelighter and a few bits of wood, and leave it for 20 minutes or so; then you push the fire to the back of the oven, and you're ready to cook. You can get pizza stones for conventional ovens to help you achieve that crust of course, but they take an hour or more to heat up properly whereas dedicated pizza ovens might only take 20 minutes to heat up and then another couple of minutes for the actual cooking. So it may be worth playing around with base thickness and toppings to find a cooking method which suits you. As long as you have the time and patience to invest in the authentic wood-fired pizza-making experience, this option could be the fit for you.
