Sergeant Jack Terry was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal [1] in recognition of gallant and distinguished services during the Rommel raid in the Middle East. This is a thought-provoking account of lost and fulfilled potential and unswerving loyalty at a time of political and religious turmoil. Unusually, John McGonigal came from a “mixed” religious background with his father a Catholic and his mother from a well-known Presbyterian family in Belfast. How to watch Love Island Games in the UK: As the spin-off to the popular dating show lands, UK viewers need to know how to view it.

Wrangel Clarke was a real-life officer in the SAS and is considered a pioneer in military deception. David Stirling was the real-life founder of the SAS, who when we first meet him in the series is an eccentric young officer serving with 8 Commando. It’s just one of a hundred vignettes from the 1938 Lions tour to South Africa involving the 23-year-old Mayne from Newtownards, a man who would go on to become among the most decorated soldiers in the second World War, an original member of the then newly formed SAS (Special Air Service), founded by David Stirling and after the latter’s imprisonment in Colditz, the commanding officer of the SRS (Special Raiding Squadron) and then 1st SAS. This is certainly how he’s introduced in SAS: Rogue Heroes, breaking out of prison in Cairo by dispensing with not one but three soldiers with a wince-inducing ferocity. A modern nomad, he has lived and worked in New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, Singapore and Tokyo.

During December 1943, reconnaissance operations were stepped up for “Operation Overlord” – this was the codename for the Battle of Normandy, the Allied operation to liberate German-occupied western Europe.

While at university he was a keen boxer, and was the Irish Universities Heavyweight Champion in August 1936. In August and September 1944, Ambrose and his force of eight men wrecked installations and ambushed German patrols in Yugoslavia.Stirling feared that his enemies at Middle East HQ might take the opportunity to disband his detachment altogether. Eoin and Ambrose McGonigal: War in the SAS and SBS by Patric McGonigal is published by Pen and Sword this month (April 2022).

Following his death his masonic jewel was kept by an old schoolfriend before being given to Newtownards Borough Council - it is now displayed in the Mayoral Chamber of the Council Offices. Mayne set an unimpeachable benchmark as a hard-drinking, free-swinging firebrand, even by rugby’s generously broad parameters of horseplay, schoolboy pranks and questionable behaviour. Light is also shone on the brothers' close friend, the legendary Blair Mayne and the controversial decision to downgrade the award of his Victoria Cross. Like countless others in the murky days of 1939, when the folly of appeasement was becoming plain under the gathering storm of war, Mayne enlisted, opting to join the 5th light Anti-Aircraft Battery.Second Lieutenant Denis Knight died during the period the Commando were based for training on the Isle of Arran. The son of Keith Allen and brother of Lily, Alfie Allen is best known for his role as Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones.
