Description

It will afford the student an opportunity to familiarise their self with the essentials of the grid and ways of producing it and also to learn how to use it through his own exercises. At the same time it places in the hands of the educator an aid which he can use to good effect in tuition based on the solution of practical problems. One of the most important books in the field since over 40 years provides an unparalleled comprehensive overview with exact directions and instructions, covering all grid systems that are needed. Exact directions for using all of the grid systems possible presented are given to the user, showing examples of working correctly on a conceptual level.

Exact directions for using all of the grid systems possibe presented are given to the user, showing examples of working correctly on a conceptual level. Rigging up an interface without any appreciation of design basics is a bit like trying to hack together an application without any coding skill.About: Josef Müller-Brockmann was a Swiss graphic designer, author, and educator - celebrated as a pioneer of the International Typographic Style. In the 1920s in Europe, works already arose in the areas of typography, graphic design and photography with objectified conception and rigid composition. Josef Müller-Brockmann was a Swiss graphic designer, author, and educator - celebrated as a pioneer of the International Typographic Style. I am grateful that the publishers keep the book in print, but such a sloppy edition ought never to have made it to print unchecked.

Given that everybody’s supposed to be learning to code these days, isn’t it time that developers learnt a little bit about design too? Josef Müller-Brockmann studied architecture, design and history of art in Zurich and worked as a graphic designer and teacher. The author, a world-renowned professional, thus offers his colleagues the tools to solve problems more easily.A master piece of design education and by far the most useful piece of design literature I have ever read. His work is recognized for its simple designs and his clean use of fonts, shapes and colors, which still inspires many graphic designers throughout the world today.

On a negative note, the book is plagued with misprints, an unforgivable occurrence in any publication, let alone a work on typography and one by none other than Josef Müller-Brockmann. I am a London-based technology architect who has led development across start-ups, digital agencies, software houses and corporates. There are a lot of horrible looking interfaces out there produced by development teams who have no idea about basic design aesthetics.

Though irksome to encounter, the misprints can be overlooked as one is engrossed in the significance of the text and illustrations. I took a 3 year course in Graphic Design way back when and this is the course or knowledge I find that was missing from the curriculum. It’s not often that practical to organize the separation of concerns between design and development that you would expect to find in a digital agency. Since the 1950s grid systems help the designer to organize the graphic elements and have become a world wide standard.
