The power/mode switch button is also janky. It's inconveniently placed and REALLY hard to switch between modes. Instead of placing it near the lens of the flashlight, it should instead be on the body with an easily accessible and easy-to-press button, not the tiny little nub that requires a very firm press to do simple mode changes. Absolutely the worst designed aspect of this device. If you're camping and it's dark, you don't want to have to fuss around trying to find the stupid button. This was very frustrating and absolutely should be redesigned.

If we are getting down to the nitty-gritty details, the metal hanging loop really requires an additional carabiner to be truly functional. This model has a waterproof rating of IPX6, but the USB port and plug are fully exposed to the elements and prone to getting crammed with dirt and debris. This model doesn't have the longest-lasting battery in its highest setting, so keep it dimmed if you need it to last for several nights. Even with those minor inconveniences, this model is an excellent option when you need a compact light that punches above its weight class. So in a nutshell, the cons I list are really annoyances but not deal breakers. For the price, this is a solid solution for camping lighting needs. It will not produce the same kind of powerful light that the GZ 400 lamp will, but to light up a small tent or table for eating, this does great. Over time, you will find the button very frustrating to use, and I suspect if you're like me you'll start looking for an alternative product that gives the same capability without the frustrations. Hopefully Goal Zero will redesign this device to get rid of these annoyances, in which case I'll happily buy a replacement rather than giving my money to their competition. LIGHTHOUSE LED MICROLANTERN & FLASHLIGHT: The Lighthouse Micro Flash Lantern and flashlight for emergency, outdoor, and indoor use is an IPX6 weatherproof light that’s perfect for any adventure. This compact USB rechargeable camping lantern fits in your hand. The Ultimate Survival Technologies 30-Day Duro is a real marathon runner. While the manufacturer advertises 30 days of power, the lantern we tested ran for 33 days. Even on its brightest setting, it lasted nine hours – one of the best models in our assessment. It has a sturdy, heavy, rubberized, impact-resistant base. A nice addition is the frosted plastic cover that softens the light and makes it easier to look at (and the cover is removable when you need an even brighter glow). This model weighs just under two pounds with three D-batteries, making it a great choice for your picnic table lantern. This powerful lantern with a rechargeable battery (via electricity or a hand crank) is our top choice for camping trips and power outages

WAYS TO POWER: For easy, fast, and straightforward recharging, connect the Lighthouse Micro Flash to a compatible solar panel and charge it in about 3.5 hours. It can also be recharged in the same amount of time using any USB source. VERSATILE SETTINGS: This 150-lumen dual LED portable camping light and 120-lumen flashlight offers the following run times (depending on the settings you use): Flashlight: 100 hours (low), 8.5 hours (high); one side lit: 170 hours (low), 15 hours (high); both sides lit: 80 hours (low), 7 hours (high). WHY GOAL ZERO: We present a new way forward in portable power use at home and off grid while staying mindful of our humanitarian roots and legacy. Since 2009, we have donated our time and products to disadvantaged communities and have impacted over 100,000 lives. Our products are engineered with precision in the United States. Glow-in-the-dark doesn't work very well, hook on the bottom is not very sturdy, hard to reattach bottom after replacing batteriesWe've tested more than four dozen lanterns over the last decade. For this review, we researched dozens of contenders and selected the most popular models to put to the test. We took them on camping trips, assessing how each performed for solo use, small groups of two to three people, and larger groups of more than four. We spent nights through simulated (and a couple of real) power outages, seeing how we fared with just the light of these luminaries. Brightness is the most important metric, accounting for the majority of each lantern's overall score – each lantern underwent eight specific tests to assess the brightness score alone. We measured battery life by timing how long each model could run on its highest setting. We weighed each model and also considered any bonus features or elements that add to their overall functionality. Finally, we consulted with a panel of professional gear testers to judge how intuitive each one is to use. By the end of our testing period, we have run 360 individual tests to assess our selection of the 24 best lanterns on the market.
