The H10's basic controls are located to the right of the 3.0" screen. The four-way controller is used for navigating menus and also gives direct access to flash, macro and self-timer and display modes. On the left are the MENU and HOME buttons. DSC-WX350 (2014, Wi-Fi, NFC, Remote control with smartphone, 18.2 megapixels, 20x optical zoom, G Lens, Exmor R CMOS Sensor, HD Movie 1080i with AVCHD, available to connect to 4K TV, 3.0˝ LCD) The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 has an excellent macro mode. Maximum magnification is achieved at a subject distance of 2cm, with the lens zoomed in to about 63mm (equivalent). The first image shows how close you can get to the subject (in this case a compact flash card). The second image is a 100% crop. The built-in flash pops up automatically when its services are required. It's one of the more powerful flashes we have seen on a compact camera - the range is about 7m (23 ft) at the wide end of the zoom, dropping to 5.6m (18.4 ft) at the tele end (using auto ISO). As long as you don't mind sensitivity being pushed up to 400 you can easily illuminate an entire room. The H10 is very compact and lightweight for its zoom range and the edgy design works well in your hand. One-handed operation is not a problem, although at the long end of the zoom it is definitely beneficial to hold it with both hands despite of the support you get from the optical image stabilization. For a camera with the H10's feature-set the external controls are pretty basic. The ubiquitous four-way controller, the menu and Sony's unique 'Home' buttons and the zoom controller are located to the right of the screen. The top plate of the camera accommodates the power-button, mode dial and shutter button. Other features include face detection technology, which identifies and focuses on the faces in a frame, and various scene modes to optimize settings for different environments.

DSC-TX9 (Aug 2010, 3.5-inch touch screen, 12.2 megapixels, 1080i Full HD Movies, 3D Sweep Panorama, 4x optical zoom, personalisation)The H10 is essentially a long zoom 'point and shoot' camera, and that is reflected in its user interface. A number of important photographic settings such as ISO or exposure compensation don't get their dedicated button and can only be accessed via the slightly longwinded menu. In the lab, I encountered some other issues. While the pop-up flash was bright, many of my flash shots were overexposed. In some cases, this resulted in blown-out images that weren't usable. Daylight shots, on the other hand, were bright and vivid, although the H10 can't match the Lumix TZ3 in overall image quality. There was normal barrel distortion on the edge of the wide-angle shots, and a slight amount of fringing was visible. Other tests generated mediocre results. Boot-up and recycle times were rather sluggish at 3.5 and 3.3 seconds, respectively. The resolution test yielded 1,850 lines, which is average for an 8.1MP camera. What hasn't changed is the stabilised, 38-380mm equivalent, f/3.5-4.4 Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens, which is not nearly as wide as that of some of the competing compact super-zoom models like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 or the recently announced Casio EX-H10, but does at least provide more reach at the telephoto end. Like most small-sensor compact digicams, the Sony H20 makes do without an iris diaphragm in the lens, meaning that the term 'stopping down' only refers to the engagement of a built-in neutral density filter. In consequence, you only have two 'aperture settings' at your disposal, irrespective of where you are in the zoom range. Another corollary is that stopping down hasn't the slightest effect on depth of field, which can thus be only controlled by changing the focal length or the camera-to-subject distance when feasible.
