Her mundane but over-the-top characters and brilliant dialogue add to the surreal and fantastical tone of this spellbinding book.

We also use them to help detect unauthorized access or activity that violate our terms of service, as well as to analyze site traffic and performance for our own site improvement efforts. Remy seeks out Jen and Horus’s apartment, risking his life to find and kill Horus, who, by a chance series of events, is actually out with his friends while Jen, who wasn’t supposed to be there, greets Remy. With his safety in danger and his mental state deteriorating, he becomes more and more susceptible to creative solutions. She’s that girl that Remy used to work with (two years and seven months ago), who now Remy only sees through social media. I REFUSE to go into any further detail than what I’ve already given, but there is so much more to the story that meets the eye. Remy and Alicia closely track Jen’s worldly travels, her up-and-coming small jewelry business, and her aesthetic self-care moments. Carla is quite open, but would she have to insist so frequently that she has clairvoyant instincts if she was truly secure in her psychic abilities? Would definitely reccommend reading this book especially if you love authors like Ottessa Moshfegh and Gillian Flynn.

Indirectly, Remy’s desire and the magnitude of his “fate” have truly actualized this monster, which destroys his apartment and the two people in his life who have been genuine friends to him, Jake and Carla. When they run into Jen, in the flesh, she invites them on a surfing trip to the Hampton’s with her wealthy boyfriend and their group. If the existence of this creature weren’t corroborated by Carla’s witnessing, I would assert that the FMTA (Fully Manifested Toxic Antagonist) was merely a projection of Remy’s mind in his deteriorating sanity and mental breakdown. The humor is dark, you never get a reprieve from the unsettling tone, the psychedelic horror element is incredibly bizarre, and the interactions between and ruthless examination of the characters behaviors is uncomfortable and often unfortunately relatable (to me anyway).I felt like I was trapped in a universe created by corporation of David Cronenberg , Terry Gilliam, Alex Garland and Charlie Kaufman. It’s as though the sheer force of his longing has manifested into this toxic antagonist in the likeness of Jen. What the hell is it with some people, taking a full two point five minutes to instruct me on how to build a pyramid?
