About this deal

She also explains how transformative a Black girls’ hair can be and the confidence that comes with it. For about three months, therefore, I relentlessly shouted about how accessing this level of yourself was the most life-changing tool you could ever be blessed with, and guess what?

A sharp and authentic love story about 16-year-old Cynthia, who finds herself caught between two brothers: one who is Black and the other who is white. I did find the ending to be somewhat abrupt, and another 50 pages could have provided a more satisfactory conclusion to the twist at the end (although it does pave the way for a sequel). I’ve had issues with non-fiction in the past, as I struggle with the condescending/judgemental tone.So glad more folks are speaking out on this topic given the horrifying inequities faced by Black women in maternal mental health (and obviously other areas too). We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed.

Cuts Both Ways is told from the perspective of those who are left behind after such tragic events and shines a light on the prejudice they are subjected to. And most importantly, no matter the circumstances you were born into, you always take for granted that the world was built to tip in your favour. One thing you could do is look up the statistics for maternal mortality in your NHS region and see how they break those down. Now am I saying that white people shouldn’t use all the tools available to help them introduce the law of attraction in their lives?

This is a good book about the Black British experience (and also has some interesting contrasts between British Caribbean and British African families) although a lot of quite challenging detail about birth and health issues. I’ve been reading a lot of Twitter lately, and as I follow a number of Black women authors I see a fair bit of discussion of day to day racism. London is all Cynthia knows, so when her parents abruptly uproot the family after a traumatic incident, to a place where there is only one bus an hour and the faint smell of horse manure continuously permeates the air, it's a culture shock, to say the least.
