It felt rushed and to be honest, I'm not sure what other way it would have ended, but maybe we could have seen Nur's family reacting to the breakup. Thank you – I did think about you when reading this as the central character’s friendships turn out to be the most important thing for him, esp with his old school friend, which is lovely to read in a book supposedly about love! It's a wonderfully balanced commentary on how, yes, our parents absolutely possess harmful cultural mindsets, but that's not to say we don't help them maintain those mindsets per our own refusal to engage with them.

He is sitting at the top of the stairs, and it is nearly midnight; his parents are in the living room, waiting for the fireworks to start. the flaws of the people, especially nur, weren’t brushed aside - they had consequences, and that was a thing i enjoyed seeing. The story has a past/present timeline, however, the majority of the chapters are shown to showcase what happened in the past between Nur and his girlfriend, Yasmina. The placement of the chapters in this way is absolutely intentional, and as you approach the end of the novel you realize it makes for a very clever parallel structure between the past and the present. everything that's a no in Islam, is made out to like oh people are this judgmental and it's made out to be that its people's beliefs and that they are rigid to the point of ridiculing it out. An exploration of the ways that race and family ties may complicate or imperil romance even if everyone means well.

Throughout this book, we follow the life of Nur, as he takes his course of life through family status, relationship status, and finding out his overall identity. This is the only logical (and, really, acceptable) ending to the book, so it’s important that you sympathise with them (mostly Yasmina though, to be honest). But as everything he holds dear is challenged, he is forced to ask, is love really a choice for a second-generation immigrant son like him? He touches upon the different issues within the British Asian community giving you an inside from a male perspective. not bc of the content (bc again I thought the commentary was excellent), but rather how it was executed at times.Overall, especially with the plot being so heavy and complex, this book was an amazing read and I would recommend it to anyone that loves contemporary fiction that makes you think about the different lives that others lead.

When Jude, as an adult, is adopted by his favorite Harvard law professor, his friends join him for Thanksgiving in Cambridge every year. He falls deeper into traps of his own making, attempting to please both Yasmina and his family until he no longer has a choice. I never felt like the book was trying to cover too many topics here—they were all given time and space to be discussed and with nuance. No Muslim is perfect and we will sin intentionally or unintentionally, but we have to acknowledge our faults at the same time. The rest of the book moves backward to depict, uncomfortably but effectively, the private history that's led to Nur's announcement and moves forward to explore the implications of his delay and reluctance for his relationships with both his family and Yasmina. Even though sometimes I get sad about how the publishing industry is still so overwhelmingly white (which sometimes I forget because folks like you and I make an effort to read books by people of color), I can feel a little more hopeful reading reviews about books like this one. Good Intentions" follows the story of the relationship between Nur, a young British-Pakistani man, and Yasmin, a young British-Sudanese woman.
