About this deal

Floorcloths aside, almost all paintings on canvas are varnished by brush and have been for centuries. Our varnishes offer physical protection from knocks and dirt, plus an extra layer of UV-light protection. strong>

Please note: due to trading agreements we are unable to ship this product outside of the UK and EU. If you apply a single coat and you’re getting sufficient coverage you’re probably applying it too thickly. Liquitex has some specific recommendations about how best to approach this if you want to check their Acrylic Book PDF.

They won’t work out cheap, especially for a large area, and they will yellow and darken over the years but if nothing else works out they might be worth a shot. BUT if you make sure all doors and windows are closed - also have a bucket of steamy water in the studio to add humidity - and apply fairly speedily with a large flat soft watercolour brush - you'll get an excellent result. It is nicely glossy and dries very quickly, unlike some of the more traditional varnishes that I have read about. I have played safe between layers and left it to cure before re-coating, as I want to try to get a really resilient finish. They also have better optical qualities, meaning they impart better gloss and depth to the painting, although you’re unlikely to really be able to notice a difference unless you do a side-by-side comparison. Anyone who has ever used Epifanes Clear High Gloss Clear Varnish will tell you why it is considered to be the world’s best spar varnish. When finished spraying, turn can upside down and push spray button for 5 seconds to prevent clogging. V.) light damage, resists discoloration, yellowing and fogging and allows for easy cleaning without fear of damaging the acrylic paint film. I noticed that one of their products also recommends using an under-coat, or “isolation” coat, of gloss medium prior to the final spirit-based varnish.

A flat-sided rectangular dish is best for this so that the brush can be properly charged – dip into the varnish and touch it to the side, which evenly unloads the excess; with a round container this tends to remove more from the edges and leave a heavy load in the centre which is especially troublesome for water-based varnish because of the application method. The spirit-soluble varnishes intended for acrylics are better, much easier to apply and their removal doesn’t generally involve any solvents that work on dried acrylic paint. This one is easy to apply (make sure you don't overbrush) it dries to an even shine, and lifts the dark colours.Depending on your style and technique, there are a wide range of traditional oils, mediums, and solvents to help you control your colour as well as varnishes to protect your work and provide a final finish. VERSATILE - Liquitex Varnish can be used on almost any painting surface, from paper and canvas to wood, leather, silk and plastics.
