Description

Margery and Gladys' is (among other things) an intentional parody of 'Thelma and Louise', with two unlikely matrons as female outlaws.

Luna is a former dancer, who left that dream behind for a grounded life managing her familyâ€s construction business and gets the opportunity to transform a gymnasium into a studio for aerials. The plot (what gets them on the move) is outright implausible, but the neighbourwatch-theme is quite good, I think. June Brown has had a long stint as chain-smoking whinger Dot Cotton on 'EastEnders': unlike Ms Keith, in real life June Brown *is* a great deal like her most well-known role. Together, over a period of several months, they pursue a mutual sexual passion whose inevitable stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs.

Believing that she has killed him, she panics and flees the house with Gladys, leaving behind her handbag. Margery (Penelope Keith) and Gladys (June Brown), the housekeeper, are involved in a crime spree in the aftermath of an attempted burglary at Margery's house in middle class UK suburbia.

Also good are Adam Godley as Keith's repressed son with a cleaning fetish, Roger Lloyd Pack as the detective counting the days til retirement, Peter Vaughan as Brown's smarmy husband, and Martin Freeman as the dumb sergeant. The proliferation of channels has led to fragmentation of the audience and a general shortage of money for quality programs. Haughty, recently-widowed Margery Heywood and her cleaner Gladys Gladwell go on the run after mistakenly believing that they have killed a teenage burglar, holding up a post office for Glady.Britain has had a long history of mainly 'gentle' if somewhat bawdy comedies committed to celluloid. The journey is quite funny as the ladies travel by train to Blackpool with a bunch of George Formby (a major British film star of the 30s and 40s) impersonators, the perfect touch for their surreal journey.

There are some bizarre incidents, as the two women must commit other crimes to obtain funds and medications. It is easy for the frequent viewer of television to become pessimistic about the future of the medium. For those who know Penelope Keith only as Margo or Audrey from TV, her dramatic moments in this film will be a real eye-opener.

Be sure to watch the closing credits where all the characters' stories are wrapped up in a series of post cards.

As a person over 60 with UK background, I was delighted by the snatches of George Formby songs towards the end. Recently widowed Margery Heywood ( Penelope Keith) and her cleaning woman Gladys Gladwell ( June Brown) disturb a would-be burglar breaking into Margery's house in Kent. A bit slapstick, a bit naughty, a bit far fetched but above all, led by protagonists that you can actually relate too.
