About this deal

Disconcerted by the strange pull of the sexist, abrupt Nelson, Ruth, Nelson and his wife, Michelle are still getting to grips with the delicacy of Kate being his biological child, and the two night affair that took place. In the past he has read about people in fires being 'beaten back by the heat' and deep down he has always thought, 'Wimps.

I like that new characters are introduced and we see new layers in all the characters as the books go on.In the distance, the sand glimmers like a mirage, and further still, the sea comes whispering in to shore, heralded by the seagulls flying high above the waves.

He had made a ground-breaking discovery that he was sure would change archaeology forever – and was petrified of the consequences. There are other books due at the library or partially read, asking to be finished, but I couldn't resist the lure of another Ruth Galloway mystery. This is another gentle, but compelling novel that slowly builds the tension and mystery as Ruth tries to make sense of Dan Golding’s archaeological discovery. She is not able to keep the voices consistent with the associated characters and her idea of the local accents is just insulting. I was somewhat worried because I'd read the previous book in the series just last month that this volume would feel less enchanting as a result. I have often wondered what exactly it was that those Elizabethan musicians chose to play as Orsino makes this speech. Elly Griffiths has a real knack for creating interesting and believable situations from almost thin air.

I also love that one comes away from these books learning a great deal more than how to commit a murder. It has, however, been a glorious week of reading, as I have devoured this series from its beginning. The importance of this work is less in the viscera of experiencing it, though experiencing it will undoubtedly change how you hear, but rather in the knowledge that it has had a direct use and effect in the real world, an involvement with horror and geo-politics that goes well beyond the walls of the Turner Prize. Earwitness Theatre is a body of work whose bones are real, and which has a purpose in the world beyond the personal experience of the art viewer. In A Dying Fall, Griffiths offers a shot of the new by moving Ruth and her almost-two-year-old Kate, Harry, his wife, Michelle, Ruth’s friend and Kate’s godfather, the druid Cathbad out of Norfolk and into a holiday stint in Harry’s hometown of Blackpool. In the previous novel he and Ruth started a relationship, but in this book Ruth realises that she is not in love with him, and I imagine that he will break up with him. It was a chance remark of my husband's that gave me the idea for the first in the series, The Crossing Places.

TBR is totally out of control now and once again threatening to overtake all available space but do I care? I am getting used to the narrator/voices in my head disconnect (you know, when what you're hearing isn't how you thought the characters should sound ); Ms Corbett is absolutely capable-her men sound like men, her accents are amazing, and I like her voice. In the opening lines of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night the Duke Orsino, a man made unhappy by his lust for love, cries out to the crowd “That strain again! We were crossing Titchwell Marsh in North Norfolk when Andy (an archaeologist) mentioned that prehistoric people thought that marshland was sacred ground.
