Description

The site does make extreme leaps in interpretations, and sometimes pushes common understanding a bit too far for the quick joke, but it still provides insight and a way to begin an argument with a fundamentalist, if you have the patience for that argument. Many new and revised maps, charts, and diagrams further clarify information found in the Scripture text. In 1965, OUP published a matching edition of the deuterocanonical and apocryphal books as well as a version of the OAB including them.

The Bible, along with every other "sacred" tome ever written, as well as all notions of the "divine" themselves, is a product of the individual and corporate human mind, and it would be great to have an edition of the most influential of these writings that treated it as such. The book is an endless repetition of the same cycle of abuse: the Jews do something that makes God angry -> God dispatches some terrible punishment on them, like a foreign army that kills or enslaves the Jews -> after a while the Jews repent and make up with God, who saves them from the very problems he’s put them in -> all is good for a while, until the Jews break God’s rules once more and the cycle begins again. At the heart of this story is the person of Christ, the one in and through whom Christians read all Scripture. well, a myth, and that the divinely mandated genocide of the Hebrew Bible and the condemnation of most of earth's population to everlasting hellfire of the Christian one is no less than sick and deranged, although in their defence this bashing is made necessary by literalist nonsense.

Although I treasure my old KJV and Rheimes-Douay, the NOAB 4th Edition is the best biblical investment I've ever made.

With the best of the Annotated's traditional strengths, and the augmentation of new information and new approaches represented in current scholarship, the Third Edition will continue to serve as the reader's and student's constant resource. I was raised in a pseudo-Christian setting where on the surface level, everyone pretended to be Christian but really were undecided and ultimately didn't think. Also I came away with a new appreciation for the wisdom and literature in some of the minor Old Testament books and even more so the Apocrypha. And, to make certain points in the text clearer for the reader, there are approximately 40 in-text, line drawing maps and diagrams. I felt that I had probably read the whole thing, almost certainly the New Testament, but with-out the context or continuity.

The site's copy of the Book of Mormon adds two new icons, one for plagiarism of passages from the King James Bible and one for Changes from the original 1830 version. The new edition includes a full index to all of the study material (not just to the annotations), and one that is keyed to page numbers, not to citations. The New Oxford Annotated Bible , with twenty new essays and introductions and others--as well as annotations--fully revised, offers the reader flexibility for any learning style.
