That person turned out to be François von Hurter, founder of Bitter Lemon Press, a small independent publisher. Clive Franklin is a Russian language expert for the Foreign Office (UK) and he is on a sabbatical in the Highlands.

It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. The Translator deals with a Russian plot to cut the undersea communication cables linking Britain to America and cripple our economy. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too. He scored 87 in the 1926 Eton v Harrow match at Lord's, an innings which Wisden described as "widely regarded as the best innings in the match for many year", and he was described in the same publication as a "beautiful player".But it did feel nice to look up Neglinnaya street etc on Google maps and see what Metropol hotel looks like , now that we can’t go there! Marina stuns Clive with the news that she’s ready to help stop the attack, betraying her country for a new identity and a new life…. Harriet Crawley enfolds you a very timely espionage story that highlights everything about the current complexities of the political situation between Russia and the West, while evoking all those Cold War vibes that I adore. A Brief History of Broadcast Journalism: The Early Years Archived 27 August 2007 at the Wayback Machine", retrieved 18 September 2007 . I’ve just been to the packed launch party of her fourth novel, The Translator, flagged by both the Times and the Sunday Times as their Thriller of the Month.

The characters were well built through the novel and I found myself routing for Clive and Marina and thoroughly disliking General Varlamov. He’s been asked to be the interpreter for the British Prime Minister, Martha Maitland, at a meeting with President Serov.Meanwhile, the very real possibility of a Russian attack on our undersea internet cables was increasingly in the news.

It’s a pacy read, intricately plotted, with a satisfying amount of intrigue and tension, and the characters are well drawn. Clive is asked to step in to translate for the British PM in Russia where he finds himself drawn into the insidious intrigues of the Russians, and also surprised to find his ex-girlfriend in the midst of this dangerous game of political chess. Both Belle and her husband are reluctant but acquiesce, and their contented lives are soon threatened by the invader.

Clive's appearance stirs feelings she thought were long buried, and through him she sees a possibility that she might escape the position she is in. THE TRANSLATOR: Clive Franklin, a Russian language expert in the Foreign Office, is summoned unexpectedly to Moscow to act as translator for the British Prime Minister. Being set in 2017, the novel feels contemporary, but the subject matter doesn’t have to deal with the war against Ukraine, which would be a different kind of book.

Clive Franklin, a Russian language expert in the Foreign Office, is summoned unexpectedly to Moscow to act as translator for the British Prime Minister. In fact, he is at Lochleven, which coincidentally recently featured as a location in Peter May’s climate thriller A Winter Grave. Within a few years she and her brothers had started an art business, and were living first in Tehran, then in Hong Kong, then travelling the world. Harriet Crawley’s approach to international intrigue may be old school, but it’s also highly readable, drawing as it does on her own family background in intelligence, and above all on an insider’s love of a wonderfully realised Moscow. Alas, the beautiful view from his study to the church on the hill and the graveyard where he is buried has now been obliterated by a housing estate for the rich.

Clive, a man keen to remain in the background, is catapulted into a tight web of intrigue and espionage. Also the president keeps her away from what is potentially happening, which is frustrating for Marina, but she will find ways to get what is needed to ensure that the Russian challenge is minimised and the British government will appreciate her betrayal of her country. There are darker emotions and intrigues galore to keep you on the edge of your seat, but also rich threads of love, passion, romance, loyalty and friendship that tie you completely to the fate of the protagonists and their endeavours. Marina is part of President Serov's inner circle but she is tired of this life, especially after the death of her foster son.
