I often wonder if others read the same book or if our own backgrounds cause us to like or dislike a story as this book seems to have a lot of mixed reviews. I bought multiple copies for my friends and the verdict was unanimous: the best British thriller in recent memory. She is not in a good place at all and when the story begins, she is being assessed for a mental health review; something bad has happened. Is the house harbouring dark secrets or is the trauma of Kate’s wartime experiences finally catching up with her?

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of My Sister's Bones by Nuala Ellwood, read by Imogen Church and Sally Scott. And so goes this tale of two sisters, one who became a war correspondent suffering from post-traumatic stress, and the other an alcoholic - both abused as children. But anyway we hope you enjoy our, often irreverent, reviews, fact filled features, and competitions plus a load more that we hope to add over time. And the reference to bones also adds to the general metaphor throughout the novel of people being lost, found, disappearing, being buried within themselves and stripped of everything they thought they knew. It soon becomes clear that Kate’s family life has not been a happy one and despite the fact that the only family remaining are Kate and her sister Sally, they do not get on at all. But an incident with a young Syrian boy haunts her dreams, and when Kate sees a boy in the garden of the house next door--a house inhabited by an Iraqi refugee who claims her husband is away and she has no children--Kate becomes convinced that something is very wrong. Her PTSD and sleeping pill habit made her a doubtful witness to those around her, despite the fact she is certian what she is seeing is real.

A horrific incident in war-torn Iraq and the death of her mother have brought a haunted Rafter home to Herne Bay, a place she believed she had escaped forever. OK - some liberties were taken with some of the minor facts about the geography but there was perfect logic in setting this story in a location like Herne Bay where nobody expects really dreadful things to happen. Kate is a renowned war reporter and only feels truly at home overseas amidst the rubble and conflict in Syria and Iraq. A horrific incident in war-torn Iraq and the death of her mother (Steed) have brought a haunted Rafter home to Herne Bay, a place she believed she had escaped forever. It is also a fascinating examination of how memories are formed, of how reliable they may be after years have passed, and of how individuals remember events very differently, and how using different coping mechanisms for survival have affected them. I was immediately intrigued by her character and the sense of tragedy and guilt that seems to overwhelm her. The cast includes Ben Miles ( Andor, The Crown), David Bradley ( Harry Potter franchise), Maggie Steed ( Paddington 2) and Lovi Poe (upcoming The Chelsea Cowboy).
