My 1999 CD was described as near 'mint' and it certainly looked good, although some careful cleaning was necessary to eliminate minor faults and improve clarity. The 2008 version has an over emphasised 'base beat', probably to try and appeal to younger post-Mamma Mia fans who expect a lot of base. I'll put it this way: if you come away from ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits unmoved, you probably don't like ABBA, and that's fine.
