About this deal

The collection is broken down as follows: BASIL THE RAT includes 'Basil the Rat,' 'The Anniversary', and 'Communication Problems'. These both take the form of a still photograph with lists of their other TV/film credits with a spoken bio about the person. In 'The Hotel Inspectors', Basil goes into fawning overdrive when he learns that a group of hotel inspectors are operating in the area. This Special Edition marks the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest situation comedies British television has ever seen.

It contains the complete two series of the 1975-1979 hotel-themed comedy programme "Fawlty Towers" which is written by John Cleese and Connie Booth and which stars John Cleese, Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs and Connie Booth on four video cassettes with all twelve episodes of the entire show in six episodes each on two seperate discs in the set and the third disc contains special features. However, a couple of years later, I bought the DVD set to finally see the whole series, and it was a markedly different experience. full frame presentations aren't overwhelmingly better than my memory of what the last DVD set of "Fawlty Towers" looked like. There is also one easter egg (2:28), which is also from the old DVD and shouldn't take too long to find. The Out Takes are a bit disappointing, in my opinion; there are only eight or so, none of which are as good as you might hope.Fawlty Towers was famously inspired by an unbelievably rude hotel proprietor John Cleese encountered whilst filming with Monty Python. In ‘The Anniversary’, a secret party planned for Sybil goes awry when the guest of honour storms out of the hotel. and these last three episodes are no different, but they introduce additional layers that subtly change the angle of the comedy. The real key, though is that the concept plays to Cleese's strengths: nobody does righteous irritation better.

In ‘The Hotel Inspectors’, Basil goes into fawning overdrive when he learns that a group of hotel inspectors are operating in the area. Communication Problems' sees Basil (Cleese) forced to deal with a deaf guest while attempting to conceal his gambling win from Sybil. Basil Fawlty, as created and performed by John Cleese, is the rudest, most boorish, most hilariously obnoxious man on the face of the planet.

Each disc has one of the famous "alternate hotel sign" title treatments on it, there is a disc breakdown on each of the flaps, and a booklet with an article about the show inside of it. In 'Basil the Rat', waiter Manuel (Andrew Sachs)'s Siberian hamster turns out to be a rat, which goes missing just in time for a visit from the hotel inspector. One of the main reasons most people will have opted for the DVD box set, or bought it even if they have the videos, is the third Special Feature disc.

In ‘A Touch of Class’, Basil’s quest for a better class of clientele seems to have succeeded with the arrival at the hotel of Lord Melbury (Michael Gwynn). The answer to all these questions can be found in this, the complete and unexpurgated scripts of “Fawlty Towers”. If you are in Australia or New Zealand (DVD Region 4), note that almost all DVDs distributed in the UK by the BBC and 2entertain are encoded for both Region 2 and Region 4. To mark its 30th anniversary, all 12 episodes of John Cleese and Connie Booth's highly successful comedy series, set in a Torquay hotel, have been remastered.
