In honour of the February 22nd release of his new album, Repeat Offender (out on Joel Plaskett‘s New Scotland Records), acclaimed, Toronto-based artist Peter Elkas is playing in Guelph every Thursday night in March. Pat LePoidevin began his interest in music at the age of 10 when he started playing the bagpipes while living in Scotland for a year. English (northern) and Scottish (Lowlands): from Middle English belle ‘bell’ (Old English belle) in various applications; most probably a metonymic occupational name for a bell ringer or bell maker or a topographic name for someone living ‘at the bell’ (as attested by 14th-century forms such as John atte Belle). This study aims to revitalize our understandings of the built environment’s capacity to make imaginable concrete social change and generate new ways of being and seeing. I analyze photographs, ephemera, artworks, and structures to argue that infrastructural endeavors sanctioned collective practices that operated in similar ways as the projects themselves, underscoring how the very basis of socialist existence in Yugoslavia came to depend upon an infrastructural definition of society and the self. Old Man Luedecke’s name and choice of instrument may suggest a world gone by, but the lyrics and melodies that he creates are contemporary.Between 2005 and 2008, Bell regularly performed as a solo artist in Athens, Greece under her own name, including supports with Oneida (2006) and Holly Golightly (2006, 2008 [15]). For example, the Sutjeska Memorial Park in Bosnia-Herzegovina (1958–75; second chapter) began as a commemoration site but grew to become both a holiday locale and the finish line for a cross-republic auto-relay that hosted hundreds of Yugoslav and international racers and revelers. With a vocal style informed by the likes of Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and Etta James and songwriting touched by John Prine, Tom Waits, and Bruce Springsteen, Bell-Smith is a bright musical force.
