Description

Primeiro pensei lê-lo como preparação para o curso, depois imaginei que lhe daria uso obrigatório na licenciatura, e a dada altura percebi que, até aos dias de hoje, nunca terminei um livro que fosse forçada a ler.

Then I got to college, and took an actual mythology class, and the first thing the professor said was, "I hope you all haven't been reading junk like Edith Hamilton. A great introduction to greek and roman mythology with reasoning behind why she decided to include (or not include) every section and story. Seria apenas em 1923, após se retirar do cargo de diretora da Bryn Mawr School, e desafiada a escrever sobre os seus adorados clássicos, que Hamilton viria a ser reconhecida como uma das grandes classicistas. She is scrupulous about identifying her source materials (on this point Bulfinch is, sadly, more dilettante than scholar). There was this one guy, whose name I'm forgetting at the moment, whom you can tell she just despised, but was too polite to say.Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.

Praised throughout the world for its authority and lucidity, Mythology is Edith Hamilton's masterpiece--the standard by which all other books on mythology are measured. On my list are The Odyssey, The Iliad, Metamorphoses, The Aeneid, Medea, Antigone, Oedipus Rex, and Circe, Song of Achilles, and maybe even A Thousand Ships, The Penelopiad, and Mythos by Stephen Fry. This was great for Greek mythology- with family trees at the back of the book to aid understanding and it was great to see how these heroes and Gods all connect. Aside from that, we get a very superficial mention of the Norse myths that takes up maybe the last 5% of the book.
