A short teaser video, which you can see above, was made to try to interest film companies in his story but for various reasons, including Covid, the project never got off the ground. Carlos was born on November 25, 1950 in Las Dantas in the municipality of Bolivar in Tachira State, Venezuela.

A JustGiving page created by his long-time friend and neighbour, Darren Hodson, says: “While we are all grieving the loss of this most incredible man, and a queen of the community, we also need to be practical and do what needs doing for his final journey. The story of the orphan Oliver, who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves, shocked readers when it was first published.

Upon learning I had read the John Wright biography, Carlos insisted I borrow a DVD featuring the only footage of his circus act, which he kindly handed to me with a bag of dog treats for my pooch. After Carlos Alirio Medina-Torres took his son back to Las Dantas in a fruitless bid to find her, the infant spent the first three-and-a-half years of his life with a Catholic host family. Part of our Learning Series in partnership with the Clare Rose Foundation and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, this session is co-presented with The Lewis Prize for Music and A Step Beyond. Unwanted and unloved, Carlos lived a Cinderella existence with his father’s family, until the circus came to town… and they sold him to a family of acrobats for the modern equivalent of 200 dollars. When I asked if he was OK, he snapped, “No, I came in here for a quiet drink, so found a spot on my own.

Being the daughter of a vicar gives her a certain respectability, one that she uses to her advantage. He first encountered the grand lady when he visited her at a Scottish castle, where she was stood in the middle of a river, fishing for trout, dressed in bright pink ballgown, tucked into her green wellington boots. This squat sphere of a man would waddle into a bar, resplendent in a floor length coat (although, he was short, so it might have merely been a jacket on an average sized person), slam his umbrella on the floor, thrust one arm into the into the air, in a flamboyantly theatrical gesture, and herald his arrival with rrrrrrrrolling R and rip-roaring, “RRRRREEEAAALLY! In his final years, I would greet him by reverently taking his hand, kissing one of his bulky rings and address him as, “Godfather. Following the loss of such a bright personality, Birmingham’s LGBTQ+ community have begun fundraising to give Carlos ‘Robin’ Medina a fitting send-off.All good things must end, and a reluctant Siobhan Dunmoore trades command of her battle group for a staff job ashore. He had first moved permanently to the city in 1982 thanks to high wire act Billy Arata and wife Margaret Hampson finding Carlos work via their Hampsons (Theatrical) Agency.
