Don’t Look Up” tries to fashion something close to a farce with the material, but McKay enjoys a stickier sense of . With only six months until the comet strikes, how can they convince a 24-hour news cycle just trying to gain an audience and get the attention of the social media-obsessed public before it’s too late? Adam McKay is a director who has gone from making off the wall comedies like Anchorman, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers to Oscar-winning prestige pictures like the financial satire The Big Short (which was genuinely very good) and the Dick Cheney biopic Vice (which was uneven but still mostly enjoyable). Ariana Grande also appears as pop star Riley Bina, a ditzy version of herself, with Kid Cudi is her rapper boyfriend; and Timothée Chalamet shows up in the film’s second half as a skater kid named Yule, a bit part that he nevertheless does a very nice job with.

I like potential end-of-the-world dramas, and Don’t Look Up is an interesting and mostly engaging film, but at over two hours, it does rather go on a bit.Was forced to watch at my older sister's place (she turns off the guest wifi so you don't have much choice! The film’s most stirring moment is an impassioned speech that DiCaprio’s character delivers on live TV.The rest (over 90 yes NINETY minutes) was a pile of brown smelly social media cliches trying (and failing) to be parody! When political leaders deny the event, the unlikely duo embark on a comedic media tour to convince the world that it is time to look up!

It’s a film of contradicting tones, at times funny and even bluntly effective with its what would you do if you knew the world was ending and no one believed you themes, and other times frustratingly obvious and on the nose. When the comet is clearly visible in the sky and people are urged to 'just look up' to show they're being lied to the President launches a counter campaign telling them 'don't look up'.It’s a movie that awkwardly straddles the line between his early-career comedies and late-career awards hopefuls, feeling way too goofy in some places to really land as drama and too dour and self-serious in others.
