Fox never explained that abrupt firing of cable news’ biggest star, allowing conspiracy theories to fester. Jesse goes by he/him and she/her, and Sasha refers to her both as her "boyfriend" and her "girlfriend". This is not my problem with the book, though it sometimes read like the internal argument one has with their imaginary enemy. I think art should be uncomfortable and intense and slimy and weird, and this took that idea and RAN with it. I was not able to connect with main character, Sasha, because she spends majority of this book obsessing about what is cool and what is not, what she should do and think as a femme lesbian and how she should present herself to others.

stars because I plowed through more than half in an evening just to find out what the hell was even happening. It’s through Dykette’s Sasha, an insufferably needy high femme in her mid-20s (think Girls’ Hannah Horvath if she wore vintage pink nighties and was “straight for butches”) that Davis lays out her curiosity with queer domesticity.Just when you think you've seen the edges of this group's eccentricities, they break out the Instagram costumery they've brought along.

Of course the racial dynamics were shitty, but I didn't come to this book expecting a nuanced conversation about American racial dynamics.

When a pair of older, richer lesbians-prominent news host Jules Todd and her psychotherapist partner, Miranda-invites Sasha and Jesse to their country home for the holidays, they're quick to accept. Chief among them is the eponymous dykette, which Davis describes as “a dyke with frills and bows and ruffles. When a pair of older, richer lesbians - prominent news host Jules Todd and her psychotherapist partner, Miranda - invites Sasha and Jesse to their country home for the holidays, they're quick to accept. Dykette is hilarious, smart, and has (in my humble opinion) the best opening scene of any novel I've read in ages. But in Dykette, Sasha seems mostly uninterested in friendship, or at least in the kind of multigenerational queer community that Jules and Miranda might fold her into. The Russian figure skater will be stripped of any titles, awards, and prizes earned after her positive sample was collected, including Olympic medals. Her nose blunted into an Anglo-Saxon snub dyed a shade deeper than the rest of her silky swirls of facial fur. Lou seems the most comfortable with themselves, and Jules is the most pretentious, like she always has to try too hard. For a lot of queer people, especially those of us who experienced trauma in childhood, romance can feel like our best hope for love, stability, and safety.i really hope we get to see more lesbian lit that openly embraces butch femme culture, not in just historical fiction where there’s the whole “oh forbidden! Davis’s new novel reads like a taxonomy of queer theory, references, and history, while offering up wholly new words and takes on contemporary lesbian life.
