About this deal

While Nick Beauvallet and his servant play more prominent roles than the heroine, she holds her own in terms of spirit and intelligence. The dashing reckless privateer Nicholas Beauvallet has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth the First for his daring adventures for England! So then Beauvallet invades Spain with an army of 2 to steal away his love and thumb his nose at some arrogant Spanish papists.

It is reminiscent of the Scarlet Pimpernel, 3 Musketeer's and Master and Commander all rolled into one but with a true Heyer romance running through it. Having plundered their own ship, Beauvallet promises to take them with him the rest of the way to Spain. Her writing career began in 1921, when she turned a story for her younger brother into the novel The Black Moth. ETA: 24 Sept 2021--in preparation for re-reading this with the GH fans group, I went hunting for the cover of the first copy I owned. The main part of the book tells of Beauvallet's journey into Spain and his adventures to carry Dominica away with him.

I did not see any interaction between the Dominique and Nick causing them to fall in love with each other. To secure the fake papers he'll need to travel into Spain Nick seeks the aid of a distant French cousin, an old friend who accompanied Nick on his European ramblings in younger years.

Author of over fifty books, Georgette Heyer is the best-known and best-loved of all historical novelists, who made the Regency period her own. Joshua, Beauvallet's "man," is a great character and we get to see part of the story from his point-of-view. I have even read a few random pages from Devil's Cub (one of my favorite Heyer's books) to check if I am not exaggerating. But even as he makes contact with Dominica's new family, Beauvallet arouses the suspicion of the French ambassador, M. While the romance is sweet, and a driving force behind the action, this book is different from many of Heyer's other works.Author of over fifty books, Georgette Heyer is the best-known and best-loved of all historical novelists, making the Regency period her own. When the final third is reached it has the usual zip and pith and pulls the reader right along with the adventurous escape; it's just a bit of a shame it isn't more engaging from the start. He has to fool the king of Spain, the French Ambassador, and the many Spanish nobles while locating Dominica and planning how to bring her out. Heinemann published Beauvalletin September 1929 while Georgette was living in a village in Macedonia.

Georgette Heyer may be a master at Regency romances, but this one set in Elizabethan times may be one of my all time favorites. A ready supply of reference books enabled Georgette to continue writing the historical fiction that she loved. This certainly wasn't my favourite Heyer novel so far, given the hero's grabby hands and ego, but at least the heroine was a match for him in many ways, and it is a fun set up.My edition is very old, actually it's the First Australian Edition from 1948, it has no dust jacket, and the pages are brown and brittle. Of all of her books, this is the one that most relies on action (rather than witty dialogue) to propel the story.

In 1929, with Beauvallet, he brokered terms which gave Georgette 15% on the first 3,000 copies sold, 20% on the next 7,000 copies and 25% on all copies sold above 10,000. At the same time, her fears about actually placing her life and future into Nick's hands and taking that irreversible plunge into a strange new world are realistic and understandable. On catching the Chevalier trying to steal his horse, Beauvallet kills him in a sword fight and assumes his identity. Nick gets what he needs but his typical good fortune leads him to something even better - after besting a Frenchman who was trying to steal his horse near the Spanish frontier, he discovers the man was the Chevalier de Guise, a courier for the powerful de Guise family who carries a secret, encrypted message to King Phillip in Spain.Joshua brings a needed comic touch into the suspense; he is quite garrulous, by turns complainer and braggart. Heyer was an intensely private person who remained a best selling author all her life without the aid of publicity.
