I would like to read more books by Emma Carrol and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. My main critique is that the pace of the book seems to soar at some points meaning particular sections feel rushed.

Emma Caroll ne poartă pașii până în anul 1941, când Londra pare a fi în flăcări, căci nemții aruncă peste ea bombe peste bombe.

Queenie and Ephraim seem horrible people at first but they turn out to be kind people with good intentions. The book had a happy ending, despite the difficult experiences the characters had endured and if I could, I would give this book a five star review.

As they find they have something in common, and both aim to help those in need, the girls’ friendship strengthens. In addition to coping with the changes to her circumstances Olive is determined to solve the mystery and secrets linked to the disappearance of her sister, Sukie. These paint a grim picture of the war, but remain suitable for younger children and should not cause any problems for your class.Set during WWII, we follow Olive and Cliff as they’re evacuated to the coast of Devon after months of heavy air raids across London. I had no idea the difficulties Jews faced trying to enter our country at such a time and wish that our laws would have done more to help.

After months of bombing raids in London, twelve-year-old Olive Bradshaw and her little brother Cliff are evacuated to the Devon coast. Reeling from the death of their father and the disappearance of their sister Sukie, Olive and her brother are evacuated to the coast of Devon. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like any of the other characters because I really loved them all Especially Queenie and Esther because there were just so unpredictable and I really liked that one minute they could be kind and one minute they could be ever so mean. An inquisitive and caring protagonist, supported by a wonderful cast of secondary characters, makes this an engaging and appealing historical fiction that young readers, and in particular fans of books such as Good Night Mr Tom and The War That Saved My Life, will treasure. It is wonderful how Emma Carrol makes her book about a girl and her brother who've been evacuated to the countryside to escape the Nazis. My favourite character was Olive because she had a lot of courage and she did things for other people that needed help. Carroll takes the readers on an emotional 'treasure hunt', encouraging us to empathise with Olive as well as gaining an understanding of what it might have been like to live as an evacuee during the war. The descriptive passages are completely unlaboured, but take the reader to the time and place with ease and believability. I thought the book showed the history of the war very well but I think it is more suitable for older children because as we know the war was a difficult time and a lot of people died. There’s so many great Children’s historical fiction available at the minute and Carroll continues that trend.

My favourite part of Letters from the Lighthouse was the ending because the last line is really gripping. The characters and their rapport are genuine and gently handled, painted with a full sense of each of every person so that the reader really knows who they are. Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc. When Olive is caught in an air raid, her mum decides that it is time her children were evacuated out of London and she is sent, with her brother, Cliff, to live in a small coastal village in Devon. My favourite part was when granny joss discovers a planet and then professor smocks(a mean scientist) says he found it. It's clear however, that some of the residents in the village have some deep secrets which, if revealed to the authorities could turn nasty for them all. And then she finds a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon, and to something dark and impossibly dangerous.
