About this deal

This took me on a rollercoaster of emotions; from squealing at the adorable-ness of the friends-to-lovers romance (Nikki + Mal forever), to the pain of reading about the family relationships, particularly Nikki's relationship with her mother. This is amazing intertwined with a friends to lovers as both characters can analyse what made them like eachother and the characteristics that each character has which allows the relationship to work. He believes that over the course of a week, he can convince her to stay in Texas, or to at least graduate high school. For fans of I Wanna Be Where You Are by Kristina Forest and Counting Down with You by Tashie Bhuiyan.

The author has a knack for capturing this raw and chaotic stage of life, and she did again with this novel. This book deals with Nikki struggling with her toxic mom and finding her way to a life of freedom, love, and happiness.

Nikki the main character has such a challenging relationship with her mum, which is so well written and portrayed that at times it is really painful to read.Until her best friend and long-time crush, Malachai, discovers her plan, and convinces her to spend spring break with him, so he can show her all the reasons she should stay in Texas. It's exhausting reading her take steps and make ways to get to that audition and get her life started, and then be dragged back to the place she wants to be least in the world. Overall it was a good read but I was disappointed that the Mother's behaviour was explained away poorly and that Nikki's sister had a more believable relationship with Mal than Nikki did.
