All in all, 5% of spirits drinkers in Germany use GIN SUL. That means, of the 24% who know the brand, 21% use them. When it comes to spirits drinkers, brand awareness of GIN SUL is at 24% in Germany. The survey was conducted using the concept of aided brand recognition, showing respondents both the brand's logo and the written brand name. Our founder, Stephan Garbe from Hamburg fell in love with Portugal and was inspired to make a hand-crafted gin using local Portuguese ingredients. At the Altona Distillery, Gin Sul is produced by hand and with great care by Hamburg's only gin distillery using botanicals from almost 3,000 km away in south-west Portugal.

I quit my job, scraped together all my savings and learned the art of distilling from a young distiller. Late in the summer of 2013, the conversion of a former joinery began and just a few months later the first juniper distillate dripped into the stainless steel jugs.

Of the 24% who know the brand, that's 8%, meaning at the time of the survey there's little to no buzz around GIN SUL in Germany. In total, 7% of German spirits drinkers say they like GIN SUL. However, in actuality, among the 24% of German respondents who know GIN SUL, 29% of people like the brand. The majority of botanicals are macerated in the still for a short period of time, before it is turned on and left to heat up very gently. A basket filled with the lemon peels, rose petals and lavender sits in the chamber, allowing the alcoholic vapour to pass through and absorb their oils and flavours. Once the liquid comes off the still, a full working day later, it is blended with water from the Lüneburg Heath area. Each year, GIN SUL releases a special edition gin. This is where the branding work takes off. The white clay is printed with glorious illustrations, each telling a small tale. The first, RUBY SUL, from 2014, was aged in a Ruby Port barrel. The second, CRUZEIRO DO SUL was aged in a Moscatel de Setubal barrel, the third, ROTA DO SUL was filled with sun-kissed Portuguese botanicals gathered during a motorbike trip across the country’s South coast. The 2017 edition, Kleine Freiheit (Small Freedom), went out at a slightly larger 4000 bottle batch (the previous had been limited to 1 or 2000) and was, contrary to any of GIN SUL’s previous efforts, a love letter to Hamburg. Juniper, cumin, anise, fennel, dill and lemons made it into the line up, along with five special pepper varieties. The all-important water is extracted from the Lüneburger Heide near Hamburg using many wells which are up to 326 metres deep. The liquid is filtered naturally by sand and gravel under the earth's surface, ensuring its clarity and purity. Another key ingredient in Gin Sul is lemon from the West Algarve. These lemons are pretty big and give the gin its distinctive citrus flavour and fragrance, complemented perfectly by the rosemary and organic juniper. Especially the latter is prominently featured on the Algarve. Paired with clear and soft water from Lueneburg Heath, which is used for the production of Gin Sul, you get a perfectly balanced gin that is pleasantly rich at 86 proof. Tasting it neat is obligatory, although you may of course progress to mixing some lovely Gin & Tonics with Gin Sul as the base. As far as we’re concerned, the German Gin scene has a great deal to offer, and if you’re wondering where to start: ding dong, you’ve found it. GIN SUL is the epitome of modern day gin. It’s global (or certainly continental) in both it’s approach and outlook, it’s really tasty, it’s evocative and it’s perfectly made. We’re big fans!We digress. Other Portuguese inspired ingredients are rosemary, peppers, lavender and cinnamon, which are said to bring an air of ‘saudade’ to GIN SUL. For those of you in need of Google Translate right now, saudade is ‘a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves.’ In short: Garbe had the holiday blues really bad! Even the name was inspired by the trip, with sul translating to south in Portuguese. The Hamburg-based brand Gin Sul has long been able to establish itself at the very top of German gins. The branding work, it’s worth noting, is quite wonderful. The distillery itself, with its warm lighting, soft wood and beautiful Portuguese tiles looks resplendent, with its beautiful 100-litre Arnold Holstein copper still gleaming away in the corner.
