About this deal

I’m going to end this review with some of my other issues with the book – a few about my personal taste and a few that I feel are more serious: When all your characters have secrets, how do you get to know them? Did you have their failures and alibis mapped out before you began writing, or did you figure out their roles as you went?

A twisty, dark puzzle...Fans of books such as The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl will find this book captivating, as will anyone who enjoys being led down a winding, frightening path. Highly recommended." — New York Journal of Books The only downside is that I waited too long to read this one. I realize it was only released last year, but it has come to my attention that ‘dark academia’ is a bit of a trend, which explains why I have found myself reading several other books recently with a similar theme. Unfortunately, the premise is already starting to wear thin for me.Plain jane Jessica Miller always felt like an outsider in their group, not good enough. Even though she dated one of the most popular guys at school, she felt like a fake. Now she is an Upper East Side girl named partner at one of the most sought after positions at a consulting company in NYC. She can't wait for reunion day...to show them all what she has made of herself....no matter what it took...she made it to the top...did the others? Solidly written fast-paced mystery! Definitely had shades of The Girls Are All So Nice Here with the reunion theme and something terrible happening while they were at school. I felt like this novel did more justice to the theme and kept me more intrigued and entertained.

New York Journal of Books “[A] captivating debut...Winstead does an expert job keeping the reader guessing whodunit. Suspense fans will eagerly await her next.” A] captivating debut...Winstead does an expert job keeping the reader guessing whodunit. Suspense fans will eagerly await her next." — Publishers Weekly Well, consider me impressed. It's been ages since a psychological suspense novel has blown me away, but that's exactly what In My Dreams I Hold a Knife has done. And, if I recall correctly, the bisexual character was the first to be revealed as cheating so yet again feeding into a stereotype (a harmful one too, even though the inclusion of multiple cheating characters makes me feel a little less annoyed about it)There were some elements to the story that I did appreciate. First, the writing was truly entertaining. It was definitely melodramatic with lots of cliffhanger chapter endings and bold one liners, but it worked for the story and it kept me reading. I also enjoyed the structure of the novel. Though there were two clear timelines – “during college” and “college reunion” – the “during college” timeline jumped all over the place which kept me on my toes and was something unusual. Finally, I also liked that all the characters’ motivations were explained without being excused and sometimes those reasons were fairly interesting. Synopsis: Ten years after graduation, Jessica Miller has planned her triumphant return to elite Duquette University. She’s ready, down to the envious whispers that are sure to follow in her wake. I’m telling you this is great, unputdownable, entertaining read while you’re lying on your couch, filling your mouth with greasy pop corn and enjoying each chapter.
