Being USB 2.0 only though, transferring from external storage devices is slow – 2.0 transfer speeds max out at about 33MB/s, which is less than 10% of the speed the onboard SSD supports. Multimedia & other features For video shooters, you can even import/stream any video footage from your card on your mobile device too. If you work as a team, multiple users can access the content of the My Passport wirelessly at the same time too. A convenient USB 2.0 port and the one-touch copy button let you easily transfer files from compatible card readers and external USB storage devices. Visit support.wd.com for a full list of compatible card readers.

The top of the drive contains a few indicator lights. A row of four in the upper right corner can display the battery level or the status of a data transfer, while two lights at the center display the Wi-Fi status and whether or not the drive is importing data. Yes, this last light is redundant and probably not necessary. Before I joined the tech-journalism ranks, I wrote on topics as diverse as Borneo's rain forests, Middle Eastern airlines, and Big Data's role in presidential elections. It resembles an external DVD drive, but considering the onboard SD card slot, don’t worry about getting it confused with anything else. For photographers, this will make the Wireless Pro stand out. Even if we had mixed feelings about past versions of the My Passport Wireless, the 2016 “pro” variant of the external HDD restores faith in the Western Digital name. The design, for one, has been overhauled and no longer resembles the My Passport Ultra or My Passport for Mac. Instead, there’s now a more premium feel to the My Passport Wireless Pro. It is a very clean, user-friendly interface through which you can access WiFi settings and Admin, Hardware, Media, Support and Firmware sections. There are a number of important options in those tabs and you might want to go through each one individually. For example, you will find quite an important setting called “Import Mode” under “Media”, which allows you to either copy everything from an inserted SD card, or only copy new files. This way, if you still have space in your card and you want to keep shooting to it, you don’t have to duplicate data each time you insert the memory card. The addition of Plex is an interesting feature and we'd like to see more of this sort of thing in the future. The drive is made of anthracite-coloured ABS plastic with plenty of rounded corners, and it feels solid.

No electrical outlet? No problem. Charge your smartphone, action camera and other mobile devices on the go with the handy, integrated 6,700 mAh power bank. My Passport Wireless SSD provides up to 1.5A of power (0.9A when the drive is powered on). The other downside also involves USB – that On-the-Go port is USB 2.0 only, meaning transfers from external USB 3.0 drives will generally be throttled significantly. What this meant was I could keep the My Passport Wireless SSD in the overhead luggage compartment on a plane, whilst our two kids could be sitting on nearby seats watching their favorite shows, and my wife and I could be streaming movies to our respective iPads… all at the same time!

That's better than the drives we tested last year and likely to be due to the higher platter density which allows more bytes to be crammed in per unit volume/area.Answer ID 6708: My Passport Wireless Pro & SSD: Mobile app Fails to Access, While Connected to a Public HotSpot Equipped with an integrated SD 3.0 card reader to offload or copy photos and videos from your camera’s SD card and create a workflow that keeps you moving.

The web interface's glaring weakness is that there's no easy file access like there is on the mobile app. To access files on your computer, you'll have to mount your My Passport Wireless SSD as a network drive in Windows Explorer or in Finder on the Mac.In addition, without the RAW file to edit on my iPad, I’d not be able to make effective edits to white balance, nor really dig into the file’s data. JPGs are fine for a simple mobile edit, but without the RAW, you’re limiting yourself. Below the setup tabs you will find a nice summary of what’s going on in the device. The chart, along with the information to the right of it, will display how much content you are storing on the device, grouped by type. To the right of that, you will find a battery level indicator, below which WiFi information is also provided. Lastly, you will find the model of your device, along with the firmware on the bottom of this screen.
