About this deal

The second volume to Lord of the Rings (books III andIV) is called The Two Towers. There is some confusion over this title as most people believe it refers to Barad dûr, the Dark Tower, and Minas Tirith, the Tower of Watch. This is a misconception, albeit an understandable one. It is understandable because Barad dûr is Sauron's main fortress and Minas Tirith the main fortress of men opposing him. Tolkien is a well known and renowned philologist- a practitioner of the study of language and his skills are on full form in this book. The third theme for the One Ring is an impervious snarl, limited to only four or five pitches, and unwavering in its focus. As with the other ancient powers of Middle-earth, Shore treats this theme to Eastern-tinted harmonic inflections suggesting a past age. The Shire & The Hobbits Some of the descriptions were nice and offered glimpses of how the process worked and what they considered when coming up with the ideas, but most were very superficial. This book follows The Art of The Fellowship of the Ring and precedes The Art of The Return of the King. Contents [ ]

So if you are really interested in the details of how different concepts evolved or perhaps if you are an artist yourself or just a LOTR super fan you may find it interesting. However now after a number of years (including the release of the Hobbit) attention has moved on elsewhere and the draw of the books has diminished, at least it has for those who are not diehard fans or people who appreciate a good book. Boucher, Anthony (August 1955). "Recommended Reading". The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. p.93. A galley proof of the combined table of contents for the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings from around that time includes a list of contents that gives the title of the middle volume as "Vol. II The Treason of Isengard and The Journey of the Ring-bearers," being a combination of the then-current draft titles for Books III and IV. [2] [3] None of these individual book titles would ultimately be used, but decades later, " The Treason of Isengard" was recycled as the title of the seventh volume of The History of Middle-earth.

In the film, Théoden is possessed by Saruman, whereas in the book he is depicted as depressed and deluded by Wormtongue. Afterwards, in the film, Théoden is still unsure of what to do, and flees to Helm's Deep. In the book he rides out to war, only ending up besieged when he considers helping Erkenbrand. Erkenbrand does not exist in the films: his character is combined with Éomer as the Rohirrim general who arrives with Gandalf at the film's end. Éomer himself is present during the entire battle in the book. SavilleLord of the Rings: The Two Towers - Trailer (Galadriel: "There is a union now between the Two Towers: Barad-dûr, fortress of the Dark Lord Sauron; and Orthanc, stronghold of the Wizard Saruman.") A trailer for The Two Towers film interprets the title as referring to the alliance between Orthanc and Barad-dûr. [7] In the Mines of Moria, the wizard Gandalf the Grey battles the Balrog of Morgoth on the Bridge of Khazad-dum in an attempt to allow the Fellowship of the Ring to escape. Gandalf casts the Balrog into the chasm below, but the demon pulls him down with it; the Fellowship believes he is dead, but he continues to fight the creature as they fall down into a huge subterranean lake in the depths of the Earth. The Fellowship of the Ring ( extended edition)· The Two Towers ( extended edition) · The Return of the King ( extended edition) The volume's title is ambiguous, as five towers are named in the narrative, and Tolkien himself gave conflicting identifications of the two towers. Elrond almost forcibly sends Arwen "to the West". Her final decision on the matter, and her reason for making it, is revealed in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The Dead Marshes are shown as foggy ponds with jets of fire rather than the misty candle-flames described in the book. Frodo actually falls into a marsh, in which ghostly figures surround and reach for him before Gollum pulls him out. Frodo calls Gollum "not so very different from a hobbit once". In the book, however, Sméagol is described as belonging to "hobbit-kind; akin to the fathers of the fathers of the hobbit Stoors" ( The Fellowship of the Ring, "The Shadow of the Past"); Stoors being one of the three kindreds of hobbits. In an appendix, Tolkien calls his relative Déagol Nahald (featured in the third film of the trilogy) a Stoor; therefore Sméagol must have been a Stoor himself. In a letter, Tolkien confirms that Gollum was a hobbit ( The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien, #214).Wayne G. The Monsters and the Critics, and Other Essays · Beowulf and the Critics · Tolkien On Fairy-stories · Five of the characters in the film are presented somewhat differently than their counterparts in the book: The primary motif for Barad-dûr and Sauron is identical to the One Ring’s Evil theme. (The three are practically interchangeable story elements.) Shore uses this theme to portray the Ring’s “character,” but it also represents its effect upon the world. THE ENTS V · The Window on the West — Frodo and Sam are captured by Faramir's men and they are blindfolded on their way to Henneth Annûn.
