Food and drinks are mentioned here and there. I wanted to represent both social economic divisions so I brought a Pomegranate Martini which would appeal to the Deverill family and Scones with cream and jam for the Doyle and O'Leary families. This is the Dutch version of The Distant Shores. The English version will be published in July, so you’ll just have to wait for a little while longer! You will fall in love with the characters and wish you could join in the family fun at the castle in Ireland and in their homes in London. I finished the last part #5 of The Deverill Chronicles. I loved this series and I truely hope this won’t be the last book!

Peace has flourished since the Great War ended, but much has changed for the Deverill family as now a new generation is waiting in the wings to make their mark. The prose is polished and rich. The characters are flawed, driven, eccentric, and alluring. And the exceptionally compelling, well-paced plot is filled with familial dynamics, drama, emotion, self-discovery, secrets, revelations, love, loss, heartbreak, courage, duty, and passion all surrounded by authentic historical events of the time. The Last Secret of the Deverills is the third and last novel in Santa Montefiore's Deverill trilogy. Spanning the course of at least 100 years we follow the Deverill family and all there chaotic wrong doings during England and Ireland's political disputes. We follow young Kitty from an infant all the way up to a mature lady. Despite all the atrocious life choices this family make, I swiftly fell in love with each and every character making this a very engaging read.

Why would I want to listen to a book when I love to read? I was pleasantly surprised. I just loved to hear the voices of this epic tale.It was a delight to hear this story with Irish accents. This is the third book I have read by Santa Montefiore and I can flat out state it won't be the last. I very much enjoyed The Beekeeper's Daughter as well as Secrets of the Lighthouse. This is the third novel of the Deverill Chronicles. This saga actually begins in 1600’s when Maggie O’Leary puts a curse on the Deverills. Apparently the Deverill’s decided to build a castle on O’Leary land. Most of Montefiore’s novels touching, magical and remarkable as they are, are a combination of real life experiences/stories and some fiction. The stories, plots, and characters that she writes about from the first novel Meet Me Under Ombu Tree and the other novels that followed are a sum of her experiences. Most of the characters in the novels have to deal with many painful experiences that the author asserts are important as a nostalgic way of reliving the past and making sense of the present. Nonetheless, the books are written to touch people on a spiritual and emotional level even as they entertain. While her very first novel was set in Argentina, her preceding novels have been in Chile, France, and Italy, countries that tend to have the same herb scented, balmy, and warm breezes just like Argentina. She has also done one of her novels in the wild beaches of Connemara, Ireland for its melancholy, gothic, and haunting tone that were missing in the other novels. Faye is in a loveless marriage with 3 grown up children and she is keen to fly from Boston to County Cork to find her long lost family and discover the reason her mother left in the first place. Sometimes second books can stand alone–this one, however, cannot. And there is no indication on the cover that this is part of a trilogy, so I have a feeling a lot of readers are going to end up confused like I was. Once I got into the book and kind of figured out what was going on, it was fine. The story started moving, and the pieces started making sense together–I still felt like I was playing catch up the whole time, though.

Zullen Kitty en Bridie ooit elkaar nog terug zien? Kan Kitty alsnog naar haar geliefde Ierland terugkeren waar haar hart en ziel ligt? Wat gebeurt er met kasteel Deverill? This novel has everything love, loss secrets and even ghosts of the past, it is the wonderful conclusion to the Deverill Chronicles.

There are some great characters in the novel. I liked Kitty very much. She seemed to be the sanest one of her family. Her mother is one of the coldest most unfeeling women I ever read. Kitty's grandparents are adorable even if her grandfather does go off the deep end from time to time. When I read The Girl in the Castle I didn't know it was book one in a trilogy. That story ended well and didn't leave you hanging. Maybe one little mystery at the end but otherwise, it could have been a stand alone novel. It was quite a treat to find two more books were planned as I very much enjoyed the characters and plot.Montefiore slaagt erin om je op het einde van het verhaal toch nog een loer te draaien. Er is de aanleiding naar een gebeurtenis waarna ze je toch nog verrast met een onverwachte wending. Op deze manier wordt je getriggerd om het vervolgdeel ook nog te gaan lezen. Si pensaba que la primera parte había sido increíble, esta segunda parte se ha llevado la delantera!!! Of Course there are those who are interested in the book and those who do not want such a book to see the light of day. The current Lord and his family are most affected by this project, so among them are those who do not want their still bleeding wounds to be reopened, but there are those who see it as their opportunity to tell their side or their “version” of the story. All Arethusa ever told Faye was that she grew up in a poor farming family and left Ireland, alone, to start a new life in America as did so many in those times of hardship and famine. But who were her family in Ireland and where are they now? What was the real reason that she turned away from them? And who is the mysterious benefactor of a significant share of Arethusa’s estate? We begin this sequel in 1939 with Martha Wallace who is coming from America to find her birth mother. Martha was adopted as an infant and went to America with her happy parents. What secrets she will discover.
