Anne Boleyn understood this all too well. She began in relatively humble roots as far as royal standards go, but to us, it was quite the lap of luxury. She was the daughter of an earl, a middle ranking noble, and was able to study in both France and the Netherlands in her younger years. She was betrothed to a few people that various church officials would refuse to officiate for strange reasons, but that never got her down. She moved up to be the maid of honor to the queen where the king himself fell head over heels for her! Catherine of Aragon was the first wife of Henry VIII. After she wasn’t able to give birth to a son, Henry VIII divorced her and married Anne Boleyn. Historically, Anne Boleyn was a Queen of England and one of the six wives of King Henry VIII. In Six, she is part of the girl pop group with Henry’s other wives. The play revolves around the girls trying to outdo one another to become the group’s leader. Her musical solo is titled Don’t Lose Ur Head which is a reference to how she died in real life. Ruling England during the beginning of the 1500s was never an easy task. It was almost impossible not to get caught up in all the politics and danger of the court. Just spending a single day around it is enough to make someone lose their head. Taking care of the peasants and making sure you don't anger the rest of the royal families is difficult enough, but you even have to know exactly how to dress properly at all times! Six the Musical tells the story of Henry VIII’s wives – how they competed to be crowned Queen and how they survived under the hands of the patriarchy of the time. When this hit musical arrived in the UK, we were approached to create one of the “Six” costumes – the Anne Boleyn. Our team of creatives were tasked with creating 2 edits of a costume that would symbolise the strength of the woman wearing it. Anne Boleyn was Henry VIII’s second wife, but also didn’t have a son. Henry VIII charged her with treason and had her beheaded.
