Totoro is one of the most iconic animated characters in film history so it probably comes as no surprise that many crafters around the world love to create variations of the Studio Ghibli icon. In Toy Story 3, Totoro makes a brief cameo as a stuffed animal. He is seen in many scenes throughout the film and also in the end credits where he juggles the Aliens. After working on 3000 Miles in Search of a Mother, Miyazaki wanted to make a "delightful, wonderful film" that would be set in Japan with the idea to "entertain and touch its viewers, but stay with them long after they have left the theaters". [6] Initially, Miyazaki had the main characters Totoro, Mei, Tatsuo, and Kanta. [6] :8 The director based Mei on his niece, [8] and Totoros as "serene, carefree creatures" that were "supposedly the forest keeper, but that's only a half-baked idea, a rough approximation".
