Description

Vratch - annoyance. Yon toonser is a richt vratch. (Unfortunately, the city dweller has been making rather a nuisance of themselves) Mineer - hullabaloo. He caused a richt mineer fan he bared his airse. (A commotion occurred on account of a fellow exposing his posterior) Throughout the years Aberdeenshire authors have embraced Doric and written many books in the Doric dialect which includes early Science Fiction and Fantasy by George MacDonald and more recently Aesop's Fables and a Scot's Bible by 21st Century author Robert Stephen. More recent Doric authors include George Morrison who wrote Thi Lyfe An Tyme's O An Enshoar Loon: Scot's Doric in 2006. Heartfelt thanks are due to all those who have willingly contributed to the contents of the 'Kist'. There are too many contributers to thank each one individually but we hope that once you have made the acquaintance of these writers you will look for further examples of their work. We would also like to thank Dr Colin Milton, Associate Director of Elphinstone Institute for his constant advice and encouragement and Dr Ian Russell the Institute's Director, for his invaluable guidance in bringing the project to its fruition.

Cat-sookins - wet, limp hair. Yer quine has cat-sookins. (Your daughterappears to have a most unappealing head of hair upon her exit from the shower) The truth of the matter is, of course, that by far the largest proportion of work of the slightest literary merit in the Doric has been done not by the "common people" ... but by aristocrats ... Sc. 1974 David D. Murison in G. W. S. Barrow The Scottish Tradition 79:Mr Taylor had his own concert party during the 1950s, 60s and 70s and was a familiar face across the Garioch for his storytelling, recitals of Burns and his own Doric poetry. Sc. 2004 Daily Record 19 Mar 33: Now here’s where you’ll really feel like you are learning a new language. If someone asked you what a “teuchter” was with no context behind it, you would most likely be baffled, yes? But fear not, we can help. A teuchter is simply someone who hails from the country whereas a “toonser” is someone who comes from the city. Oxter - armpit. Av minky oxter fay ging to T in the Park. (My levels of personal hygiene slipped considerably at Scotland's pre-eminent music festival) I always thought Doric meant Scots, but to some people, it has come to mean the language of the North-East only. He [Hugh MacDiarmid] goes on to describe the existing dialects as the 'disjecta membra' of the Doric: surviving varieties of Scots are fragmentary and debased, mere remnants of language. Sc. 1987 Scotsman 2 Mar :

Greek Dorians living in Sparta were said to use a more succinct form of the Ancient Greek language - often with harsh pronunciation and restricted vocabulary - compared to the Attic language spoken at the time in Athens. Go to The Broch, the Fraserburgh area, to hear a broad accent of the Doric. You may wish to take an interpreter! Galshiks and Smacherry (Sma-herry) both referred to the practice of buying lots of little sweets like Sports Mixtures, Bananas, Milk Mice, Milky or Caramel Chews, Aniseed Balls etc. from the local paper "shoppy" Doric Ditties sell a range of Doric gifts such as photo poems which are original readymade poems that feature original photographs, on a variety of themes. For example some of the photo poems show the beautiful Moray Coast of Scotland whilst others are a range of quirky and animal photo poems. Heid-bummer - boss. The heid-bummer at ma work looked unca revelt. (My line manager adopted a confused expression)

Rowie/buttery - savoury bread roll. Far's ma rowie, mither?(I've misplaced my salty baked comestible, mater. Could you assist in its relocation?) In addition to verse and prose written by adults we have included verse and prose by children. We have also incorporated information on fiddle music of North East Scotland, the Artistic heritage of the North East and the Ballads & Bothy Ballads which do much to mirror the cultural and social life of the area. Stonehaven has fallen to a post-apocalypse event. Zombies are rife. People are being killed. The military has only one man in the area, RAF gunner Jason Harper. He hates killing. Fit Like Yer Majesty? was compiled by children aged from 14 and adults up to 92 years. The artwork for Fit Like Yer Majesty? was produced by artist and illustrator Bob Dewar who used to work at DC Thomson for the Beano and Dennis the Menace. Drookit - drenched. A wiz trapped under thon brandet and am drookit! (Alas, I found myself caught under a drain cover and I'm subsequently soaked to the skin)
