Research from Women in Rail showed that 16% of people who work in the rail industry are female but only 2% of females in the railway industry are engineers. Engineering UK recently reported that 14.5% of those working in engineering are female. The stark difference between the two stats (14.5% versus 2%) shows that we as an industry have much more work to do to attract female engineers into rail.
Chrisma spoke on this explaining: “To meet the growing demand for an increasing rail workforce, we need everyone to promote rail to the younger generation through the various STEM programmes and career workshops in schools. The railings shouldn’t protrude from the wall more than 4 ½ inches. This is important because you don’t want your handrailing to take up space in the walking path of your stair railing. This can prove to be a safety hazard, especially in instances when someone is carrying items with them up and down the stairs. But for the rail industry itself, its customers, and everyone who depends on a thriving rail sector.Only at the end of the 19th century were women employed in increasing numbers in administrative work and telecommunications. The 20th century’s two world wars changed women’s employment opportunities on the railway.
Earlier this month, TfL announced the return of the Night Tube, with the service resuming on the Victoria and Central lines on Saturday 27 November, after being suspended since March 2020 due to the pandemic. Services on these two lines will run throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays, providing more options for customers who need to travel at night either for leisure or for work, while also making journey times shorter and offering safer routes home for women, girls and all Londoners. Training still needs to take place on the other Night Tube lines - the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines - so Night Tube services on those lines can return as soon as possible. The first thing you should do when you are painting the railing is to put primer on it and let it dry. Then, you should sand the rails down to ensure a smooth surface for the paint. I have been in the railway for over 10 years starting out front line within the station customer service and retail teams. Since day one I have always seen my main purpose as helping people, from assisting customers and colleagues at stations to moving into Learning and Development where for 5 years I welcomed and supported the progression of new and existing colleagues across the organisation. Leading on outreach programs with charities such as the Prince’s Trust and Mencap to ensure we inspired young and underrepresented members of society to join the railway family.
As a result, the foundation of the railways was imbued by a definitive maleness; a strict hierarchy of rank and disciplinary procedures, modelled on the armed forces. Rail work was, unequivocally, man’s work and 19 th Century propriety defined a woman’s place in the home – further shaping the attitudes of, and towards, the rail industry for centuries to come. It might take innovation, and a willingness to listen, but a few changes can make a big difference.
