Fusible Batting is made with a fusible resin on both sides of the batting. This allows you to “baste” a quilt by simply ironing the three layers together. This is a temporary fusing and typically works best on smaller scale projects. You can find Fusible Batting here. How to Choose Batting for a Quilt – Advice from a Long Arm Quilter: Some quilters refuse to hand quilt because they think that working with a small needle would prove too difficult. A lot has changed since the days when quilters only used “between needles”. Lastly, Under the Canopy’s quilt is washer and dryer friendly, so you don't have to bother with line drying. Its hassle-free care instructions and supremely soft fabric make it a staple all year round. If your thread keeps twisting, hang the thread by the end closest to the quilt and drop the needle down. Bring the needle to almost the end of the thread and allow it to untwist.

If you have a special quilt that you want to invest in, I think batting is an important thing to consider. I always recommend 100% wool if you want to “show off” the quilting. I mostly recommend this for custom quilting because it really makes the quilting POP!This is a great choice if you plan to display or enter a quilt into a show. We use Quilters Dream 100% Wool. I have tested it in many of my personal quilts and it washes and wears well. While this quilt is machine-washable, L.L. Bean does recommend that you line dry it to keep it intact for years to come. If you don’t mind hanging up your quilt whenever it needs a wash, we think it’s a well-made option for those looking for traditional quilted bedding. High-quality quilts can be expensive due to the craftsmanship and materials used to make them, but thankfully there are some great budget options available. This microfiber quilt from Target stood out for using Oeko-Tex certified fabrics, meaning it has been tested for 400+ harmful chemicals and proven safe. We also like that it can be machine washed and dried, which is much more practical, especially for those who don’t have space to line dry their bed linens. However, every year women want to learn the hand quilting technique. Whether it is to slow down and enjoy the process or pass on an heirloom, the fact remains that hand quilting has survived the modern world.

Cotton blend batting (usually 80% cotton/20% polyester). Very similar to the cotton option, but a cotton poly blend is less-expensive and doesn’t shrink as much. Good for machine quilting. This is what I use most often. This quilt is filled with cotton and uses box stitching to create a clean pattern on your bedding, which gives it a lightweight feel. The outer lining is microfiber, a soft and durable material that’s less prone to wrinkles but traps in more heat than cotton or linen. With this in mind, we recommend that hot sleepers consider other quilts, as they may find this one too warm, especially during the summer.

The main downside here is price: Linen is more expensive than other fabrics, so this isn't a budget-friendly option. However, The Citizenry offers free fabric swatches so you can get a feel for their linen before you take the plunge. We believe this quilt is worth the cost, given that it manages to be buttery soft, lightweight, well-crafted, and cozy all at once—what more could you want? West Elm's Tencel quilt is best suited for hot sleepers or people living in warmer climates. You can pair it with a duvet or blanket for more warmth, but you may not like its cool touch if you run cold at night. Tencel also has a sheen, so you may want a cotton or linen quilt if you prefer matte bedding. But for those who like to be as cool as a cucumber in their sleep, this quilt will keep you at a perfect temperature throughout the night. The hand-quilted design offers textural interest while still remaining endlessly versatile. We also appreciate that there are over 20 colors available, ranging from navy to jade to crisp white. Different sizes are also available to suit almost any bed. This quilt doesn't carry any key certifications, but all things considered, we think the price is right on point. Try to make your stitches consistent; even if that means they are a little bigger than you would like. As your technique improves, the stitches tend to get smaller. If you are using your machine, set the stitch length somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5 mm. The stitch length you use will also depend on the type of exterior fabrics you are using in your quilt. When you are hand sewing a baste stitch is your friend and the more baste stitches you use the merrier your project should be.When it comes to choosing a quilt, the material is one of the most important considerations—after all, this is what makes a quilt, a quilt. "Significant for a quilt is that it is a bit stiffer and less malleable than blankets or duvets," says Anki Spets, bedding designer and founder of Area Home. Depending on your look, Spets is partial to materials like linen and cotton, which are as functional as they are easy on the eyes. However, "any stable material will work so long as it can handle the stitching and keep the fill in place," she adds. Or use those scraps to make small ‘quilt-sandwiches’ to practice your machine quilting on your own machine. What Size Batting Do You Need?

If you're open to splurging on a luxurious bed cover, the Serena & Lily Baywood Quilt is a great option. Made with a linen-cotton fabric blend, we found this quilt to be soft and welcoming. It has a medium weight that's warm enough for cold winter nights but also breathable enough for the summer months (that is if you choose to sleep with it). Be careful when choosing patterns that have long straight lines. Although they are easy to quilt with a running stitch, any stitches that are crooked are easily seen. Out of all the lightweight quilts we looked at, this cotton quilt from Quince stood out for its weightless quality and use of cotton voile. Cotton voile, which is a lightweight and gauzy version of cotton, brings cloudlike comfort to any bed. This type of cotton is also more breathable, allowing air to circulate throughout your bedding so you won’t overheat in the middle of the night. It has a supremely soft touch that is amazing to curl up with, particularly in the winter reading a great book. The lighter fabric is more prone to snags and tears though, so it’s not the best choice if you have pets or rowdy kids.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Batting for a Quilt:

Soft to the touch and light as a feather, the Company Cotton Voile Quilt is the perfect complement to any bed. It’s made out of—you guessed it—cotton voile, which is an airy fabric that works perfectly as a coverlet in the summer or as a bed topper for extra warmth when it gets cold. The filling is also 100 percent cotton, which gives this quilt a weightless feel. The wonderful world of sewing or quilting provides you with a lot of flexibility, freedom, and opportunities to be creative. You do not have a lot of hard and fast rules to follow and can create a quilt the way you want it to look.
