ENEMY AT THE GATES will rank as a masterpiece if not the best novel of Kyle Mills career in the thriller genre. Superbly written with edge-of-the-seat action, it focuses on the theme of betrayal, the kind of betrayal that damages not only a nation, but the kind that hits straight to the gut, that’s the most traumatic, the deadliest to the heart and soul, and the most personal. It’s a betrayal involving those caught in the middle and who suffer the repercussions of the most powerful players in the world squaring off against each other. A toxic presidential election is ongoing in an America that is already weakened by internal divisions. Mitch Rapp, a CIA’s best counter-terrorism super-agent has worked with many presidents, but Anthony Cook is different. He is cunning, autocratic, and distrustful towards government-run agencies.

Mitch Rapp has settled into a happy life with Claudia and her seven-year-old daughter Anna. His moments with Anna are some of the cutest and happiest in the book. Irene Kennedy – Irene Kennedy (introduced in Transfer of Power as Director of the Counter-terrorism Center) is Mitch Rapp’s recruiter, friend, and staunch supporter. She is the Director of the CIA. In Uganda, Rapp is tasked with finding and keeping Ward out of harm’s way. However, there will be issues, as a ruthless warlord has his eye on the man and all that he could bring in the form of riches. Rapp will have to struggle through unfamiliar terrain to protect Ward and get to the bottom of what has been a secret laboratory that possesses Ward’s scientific work, all while remaining off the radar. It’s possible,” Ward admitted. “But we have people on the ground telling us that there’s significant guerrilla activity in the forest to the east of the facility. As though they’re searching for something.” A huge thank you to the team that creates the Ambassador program for giving me the pleasure to read my favorite series early and recruit new fans to the World of Mitch Rapp! The stage is set involving some of the most cunning and powerful players on the world stage. For the President et al, it is all about money, his/their (Wall Street)money, as in betting on a sure thing and having the rug pulled out from underneath. For others, it is being trapped between two titans, both determined to win. It is much like a chess game. Move, and countermove. For one it is about loyalty to nation and comrades in arms. For another, it is personal loyalty. The mutual theme is betrayal and a no-win situation for all involved. CIA’s director Kennedy gets the information about evidence of a mole scouring the Agency’s database for sensitive information on Nicholas Ward, the first trillionaire. Rapp has to protect him. But this time Rapp’s job is as difficult as he has to protect Ward and use him as bait to find the face of a traitor who is passing valuable government information.

CIA director Irene Kennedy stepped into the president’s outer office and paused to take in her surroundings. The changes had continued in earnest since the last time she was there. The décor and artwork were even more modern and now the carpet had been replaced with a wood floor that bounced sound around the room. Mike Nash– Mike Nash is a friend and former partner of Mitch’s whom Mitch mentored and helped get a desk job at the CIA. Setting so many scenes in Uganda and South Africa is also a welcome change. No surprise to readers of the series, the action scenes continue to be well-done and very engaging. Meanwhile, when Kennedy discovers evidence of a mole scouring the Agency’s database for sensitive information on Nicholas Ward, the world’s first trillionaire, she convinces Rapp to take a job protecting him. In doing so, he finds himself walking an impossible tightrope: Keep the man alive, but also use him as bait to uncover a traitor who has seemingly unlimited access to government secrets. As the steward of Mitch Rapp and the characters and world created by Vince Flynn, Kyle Mills is excelling. He has taken the saga to new heights. Enemy at the Gates is Mills' best novel in the series, and may very well be the best in the entire Mitch Rapp catalogue.Within the first chapter I was hooked and ended up reading 85% of the novel in one sitting. The only reason I didn't finish it in one bite - I had to work the next day and get up early! (Thanks Kyle for keeping me up late! lol) My understanding is that the facility burned,” Kennedy said. “It seems likely that they were inside.” Kyle keeps proving why he was the best choice to continue the Mitch Rapp saga after the untimely passing of Vince Flynn and keeps me wanting more. I am now anxiously awaiting the next installment to see where Mitch is heading and what is in store for the rest of the characters in the Rappverse after the events of Enemy At The Gates (so many questions left unanswered). Narrator is a living legend, he is one of my favs and that says a lot as I've listened to 4,000 books. One of the secondary characters from the entire series is written way out of character, as author takes liberties with him that are unwarranted and ends in tragedy and a travesty.
