Description

The included footprint adds additional value to this well-constructed tent. The mesh is 40D polyester, the tub floor is 68D ripstop polyester, and the poles are DAC Pressfit aluminum. The interior square footage is small, but dual vestibules help to keep everything you don't need for sleeping separate. And while very lightweight, you'll sacrifice headroom in the tradeoff. Overall, this tent is small but mighty and a great addition to any campers toolbox, depending on your needs.

We spend time with each tent to evaluate all of the most important aspects of their performance, which you’ll find in detail below. We weigh each model on its own merits but also compare them to our other selections to determine relative performance and value to the competition. Space and Comfort Dome-style tents are generally better at standing up to bad weather and many come with full-length rainflys for added protection in heavy rain or snow. Our group all felt that durability was another high point for the North Face Wawona 6, and the poles and tent floor shined particularly bright. The tent is smaller than the other 6-person tents we’ve looked at, and unless you’re on the short side, you‘ll struggle to stand up inside. Even large 6-person tents may be less than six feet in the center and the sloping sides make it harder to move around. Overall we were impressed by the Nemo’s performance, but had a few concerns with the new design. The first came when setting up the tent as a tester managed to bend one of the rivets that hold the side poles in place. It didn’t effect the performance of the tent, but it was enough to remind us that this new design is still relatively untested. The second is that as much as we love the Highrise’s window awnings, they aren’t the most aerodynamic shape out there. We didn’t get a chance to test the tent out in any serious winds, but we felt they could be a liability in heavier gusts. Still, this is an impressive accomplishment as a four-person shelter, and we all felt that the unique design, tough materials, and lifetime warranty were all well worth the asking price. Read our full test and review… Pros:

With a maximum height of 7 feet, even the tallest camper will be able to stand upright and walk around in the Alps Mountaineering Camp Creek 6-person tent. The Kingdom 6 won out as the best all around tent, but I’d recommend reading our review of the Wawona below as the two tents have different pros and cons and will suit various campers. A premium quality four-person shelter with solid weatherproofing and unique features. Rainfly doubles as a standalone portable shelter. See Review

Our Verdict

The fly isn’t particularly difficult to set up, but because it uses its own pole and needs to be staked/guyed out to function properly, it does add another step to the process over comparable models such as the Nemo Aurora Highrise. The Wawona definitely wasn’t the only tent in our test with a pole supported vestibule though, and considering it’s probably our favorite vestibule of the bunch, it’s hard to fault it here. Our first setup took about 15 minutes total (learning process included), and we were able to shave it down to about 10 after a little practice. However, while we love the generous dimensions and clear attention to detail, the Snow Peak Alpha Breeze falls short in a few areas. In addition to being heavier and pricier than most options here (while also smaller), the tent’s slanted rear detracts considerably from usable space. Setup is also fairly involved given the unique pole structure, although many will find this to be a worthwhile trade-off for the convertible vestibule and all-around solid structure. In the end, the Alpha Breeze isn’t the most convenient or livable option here, but the combination of build quality, toughness, and sleek looks nevertheless stands out in the market. The North Face Wawona 6 was part of our intensive field test, and as such, was evaluated on all the most important performance aspects of any camping tent worth having. We take a hands-on approach to everything from the up-close inspection of materials and craftsmanship to the big picture that is overall livability. The Wawona scored high marks pretty much everywhere, so if you’re considering one yourself, here’s what to look forward to. Space and Comfort
