The series is a cookery simulation-styled minigame compilation of many video games and adventures for Nintendo gaming platforms. Generally, the gameplay revolves around performing different kitchen tasks, through the instructions of "Mama", to cook various meals. The series so far consists of five main games on Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS, two spin-offs on Wii, two spin offs on DS, and a spin off on 3DS. It also spins off into the Gardening Mama series. The original Cooking Mama game was also ported to iOS. A sixth main series game, Cooking Mama: Cookstar, was released for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2021. Tilting a strainer too far and spilling all our carefully cooked rice into the sink, for instance, merited an approving thumbs up and a ‘Not too bad!’ from Mama. It keeps things friendly and accessible for everyone, including younger players, and makes each recipe an experience to enjoy rather than a challenge to overcome. Gameplay involves the player following the instructions of the titular "Mama" to cook various meals. This is performed by using the device's controller, typically the touch screen, to perform various kitchen tasks such as chopping vegetables, slicing meat, flipping food in pans, and arranging the final items onto a plate. Each of these tasks is accomplished by completing a minigame which usually lasts less than 10 seconds. The series' gameplay structure consists of the player progressing through a series of short minigames. Sweets can be arranged and displayed in the sweet shop, then given to your customers to bring happiness to them all. The more sweets you create and complete, the more recipes you discover and the more your shop expands. Better yet, take on your friends in a competitive cook-off for up to four players, seeing who can make the tastiest treats of all!*Dishes are created by using the DS stylus as your all-in-one multipurpose kitchen tool. With it, players can chop, slice, pan fry, knead, grate, mash, tenderise, mix, peel, carve, roll and much more besides. Once you have selected which dish you would like to create it is from there that you must prepare all your ingredients (so chop them up, dice them, peel them) then you must mix the ingredients and finally cook them.
