About this deal

Generally, etch primers do not require sanding, and 1K primer (high-build or otherwise) is usually spayed over the top before preparing the panel to receive the colour coat. Etch primers are the only primers suitable for use directly on galvanised panels. This is achieved by combining an acid with the paint so that the acid microscopically etches the surface of the substrate, thus forming a physical and chemical bond between the two. Can create a barrier where a surface has chemical properties (such as high alkaline content) which might react and affect application of the top coat It should also be noted and remembered that all Etch Primers do not start to etch until they start to dry. Applying Etch Primers This type of primer is normally available as ‘high-build’ primer. High-build primer has three main functions:

This should be repeated at least a further two times to ensure that the surface is clean and free from grease and dirt. Sealers are usually lacquer based, so they’re easy to apply and dry very fast. Primer-sealers are generally enamel based. They can be used to prime bare metal and as a sealer under any enamel paint job. Wrap a piece of rag around the gun/cup connection point to keep paint from dribbling out when painting with the gun in a nozzle down position Many ferrous metals are also prone to rust due (the rust level will depend on the amount of iron and whether other metals such as chromium have been added). Non Ferrous MetalsHold the can 20-30cm away from your surface and spray, moving the can from side to side, overlapping slightly. It's a good idea to keep the same distance as this will help the primer apply evenly. Red oxide primer protects against rust and corrosion. Use it on ferrous metals likely to be exposed to the elements especially cold air, damp and humidity. It is widely used in the industrial and agricultural industries for structural steel work, outdoor equipment and railings, gates etc. Once applied the Etch Primer needs to be left to dry, both to allow the etching process to work and to allow the evaporation of the solvents contained within the paint. Always ventalate your work area - Good ventelation is nessasery when woking with aerosol spray paint not only to clear the fumes, but good air circulation helps the drying process.

Each of which will provide the right basis for your paint restoration project. Spray primers & etch primers Note…an undercoat may follow application of a primer in some circumstances (which hopefully we clarify below) Always shake well befor use - Our heavely pigmented aerosol spray cans can easely settel out, potentialy giving uneven colour and coverage. If you’re spot priming isolated repairs, overlap the primer onto the existing paint about 25 or 50 mm all the way around the sanded surface. If the entire vehicle is being primed, start with the doors, bonnet and boot lid/tailgate openings. Spray the primer on evenly, in smooth strokes. When they’re done, allow them to dry for 10 to 15 minutes, then close everything up and start on the outside metal.

What’s an Undercoat?

It contains acid which etches the surface (creating a physical and chemical bond) and promotes adhesion of subsequent coats. What is primer paint when it comes to your vehicle? Primers are the most common undercoats used when refinishing car bodies. They’re used to build up and level feathered areas or rough surfaces and to provide a smooth surface for paint. Primers have several unique characteristics: It is also advisable to use an etch primer on fibreglass and resin mouldings. Fibreglass is manufactured with a gel coat that is designed to be strong and durable without the need for paint. Resin kits are manufactured using a chemical process that is very similar to two part epoxy resins. A primer usually acts as some kind of protective or preparatory coating. Different primers can have different purposes. This often depends on the surface to which it is being applied. In general a primer does one or more of the following: So primers and undercoats do serve different purposes. You may find some coatings that are suitable as both primer and undercoat for certain jobs or surface types.

Etching Primer is used on non ferrous and galvanised surfaces to help with adhesion of subsequent coats. Etching primer effectively ‘eats into’ the ‘galv’ (without completely removing all the zinc protection of course), to prime and protect the surface at the same time. Whilst this allows for complex parts to be moulded it can leave a surface that is 'slippery' and does not accept paint. Anything in an aerosol can may do damage to your health, so you must be prepared before using spray-on etch primer. A ventilator mask is the best way to protect your respiratory system, and you should also only ever apply the primer in a ventilated area. You may also want to use goggles and gloves.

If Stainless Steel has already been used, the only advise we can offer is the roughing up of the surface with 600-800 grade paper, cleaning the surface with PQ17 and then applying the topcoat directly to the metal. Whilst this is not ideal it is the only way for the amateur. More paint finishes are ruined by the application of paint over Etch Primer that is still drying than almost anything else. You should always keep the primer away from fire as it is highly flammable and the can may explode if it gets too hot. There is almost nothing that an amateur can do to etch Stainless Steel and our recommendation is to avoid, wherever possible, the use of this material. The first and most important step when applying primer is to get the body’s surface ready first. Use compressed air to remove all dust and dirt from joints and recessed areas, then wipe the entire car down with wax/silicone remover.

It gives a layer of protection before a top coat is applied and will still adhere to surfaces that already have traces of rust. Shake your can thoroughly. This is important as if you don't shake it enough the primer won't be mixed properly and you'll end up with an uneven coat. If in doubt, shake more than you expect; you can shake too little, but you can't shake too much. You can now apply the Etch Primer to the substrate, only the thinnest coat is required and a second coat is not necessary. White Spirit and turpentine substitute should not be used as they are firstly not strong enough and secondly they leave a residue on the surface.

Single Pack Etch Primers

Etch Primer is a paint that is designed to physically bond itself to the substrate to which it is applied.
