About this deal

Sublimation on vinyl can result in various signs and effects. It is essential to be aware of these indicators to assess the quality and longevity of your sublimated vinyl products. A: Nope. See the question above, and remember that the only vinyl suitable for sublimation is clear sublimation HTV, white sublimation HTV, white glitter HTV, holographic HTV, and glow-in-the-dark HTV.

Note: If you want to use cotton shirts instead, lower temperatures (and special layers or coatings) are recommended to avoid scorching. See my How to Sublimate on Cotton and Dark Colors tutorial for more details. When it comes to cleaning sublimated vinyl, it’s important to avoid harsh chemicals or abrasives that can damage the design or the vinyl itself. Here are some substances to steer clear of:

The temperature is one of the most important factors when determining sublimation heat press settings. It is important to find the best temperature for the material you are using. Too high of a temperature can cause damage to the substrate, while too low of a temperature can result in a blurry or faded design. I list all of the temperatures I’ve successfully used on all the blanks I’ve tried in my Sublimation Cookbook. Use a brayer to smooth the clear HTV - shiny side down - onto a clean green StandardGrip mat. The matte side should be facing up. A computer, either Mac or PC, laptop or desktop, will allow you to use software so you can make your own designs, like I do. It is possible to use an iPad or tablet, but there are fewer software options. I like to make my designs in Photoshop or Illustrator on my computer, but there are many other programs you can use that are free or low-cost such as Inkscape, Gimp, Canva, Affinity Designer, Procreate, Corel, and more. You can even just print from Google Docs, Cricut Design Space, or Silhouette Studio basic edition — which are all free — if you don’t have other options. And the Sawgrass printer comes with its own software! And if you’re not into designing your own things, there are lots of designs out there that you can get specifically for sublimation, including many that I have here on my blog for absolutely free! Once you have a design, you can just open them up in Notes, Google Docs or Microsoft Word to print them. When it comes to cleaning sublimated vinyl, gentle handwashing is the preferred method. This approach helps to preserve the integrity of the design and prevent any damage to the vinyl itself. Here are some steps to follow when handwashing sublimated vinyl: You may also have heard that you can use laser copy paper, BUT, be aware that it will make your prints look more faded and washed out. So use this at your own risk. The third step is to adjust the settings based on the results of the test print. If the design is blurry, faded, or smudged, increase the temperature, pressure, or time. A little bit of experimentation goes a long way here. If the design is too dark or has ghosting, decrease the temperature, pressure, or time. And when you DO find the right settings, be sure to write them down! Tips for Achieving the Best Sublimation Results Heat source, such as a Cricut AutoPress, Cricut EasyPress 2 or 3, Cricut Hat Press, Cricut Mug Press, traditional heat press or tumbler press— you can even use a convection oven or air fryer for things like tumblers and mugs

NOTE: Your printer’s controls will appear but might be hidden behind Cricut Design Space. Minimize your Cricut window to find it. It may look different depending on your printer, computer, and software. Use my settings as a guideline, but adjust as needed to fit your tools. The press time and temperature to sublimate on vinyl can vary depending on the type of vinyl you use. To initiate the sublimation process, your heat press needs to reach a temperature of at least 350℉, and you can sometimes use a temperature as high as 400℉ if the kind of vinyl allows it. Next, open up the program you use to run your electronic cutting machine for vinyl. Use the trace function to cut out a shape from the HTV just ⅛” of an inch smaller than the sublimation print. High-quality sublimation paper is also essential for achieving the best results. Make sure to use sublimation paper that is compatible with your printer and substrate. I recommend A-Sub sublimation paper. Low-quality paper can result in poor quality prints, such as blurry or faded designs. Use the Right Pressure Have you ever encounterVinyl is a smooth, flexible type of polyurethane used in decorative printing techniques. The vinyl is cut out into the desired design using a cutting machine. Vinyl printing works best on t-shirts and other apparel. And with the correct care, it can last a little while. However, you shouldn’t expect it to look as good as new after multiple washes. Sublimation vs. Vinyl: A Pros and Cons Comparison You must use special sublimation paper. I used TruePix (for Sawgrass) and A-Sub (for Epson) during my tests. The equipment and materials needed for this method are relatively expensive. However, it’s typically worth it in the long run, thanks to the high-quality, long-lasting results. A: Each sublimation project will be different, but for THIS project you’ll press your clear HTV at 385° F (196° C) for 30 seconds to apply it to your shirt, and then sublimate at the same temperature for 55 seconds.

I’ll also use my Cricut Maker 3 cutting machine to print then cut the sublimation paper, and cut the vinyl. Any of the Maker or Explore series Cricut cutting machines will work, because they have Print Then Cut capabilities. You can print on a vast array of materials and products using the sublimation method. However, you’ll need a different heat press dependent on the type of products you wish to use.Heat Press to Transfer — Finally, you utilize a heat press that infuses your design with the fabric or other material. Depending on the product, the temperature could reach 400 degrees. Create a Design — You start by creating a design using unique vinyl material. It comes in all sorts of colors and textures and can be cut with a machine into any shape. Another crucial aspect of preventing sublimation issues on vinyl is maintaining proper temperature and pressure settings during the heat transfer process. The temperature and pressure applied during sublimation can greatly impact the outcome of your designs. Sublimation printing uses heat to turn synthetic dyes into a gas that can permanently fuse with a surface like some types of vinyl. The basic process of sublimating onto vinyl involves printing a design onto transfer paper using synthetic dyes and a sublimation printer. Sometimes, you need to use an electronic cutting machine to cut out the shape of the print and the vinyl before using a heat press to transfer the color onto the vinyl. Finally, you use a heat press to transfer the design on the paper to the t-shirt and then peel away the paper.
