About this deal

But the dude characters are just as boring and one-dimensional as the nasty fat pâté lady. I did not care about anyone in this book. For a novel that's supposedly about a town, I had virtually no sense of anyone in the community. They were all cardboard cutouts with vaguely silly names. Like a silly haunted tram ride at Universal Studios. This is all it takes for people to plunge into insanity: one night alone with themselves and what they fear most.” The HSL Model is used by photographers and videographers who work with light. This model uses three colors – hue, saturation, and lightness. Hue refers to the color itself; saturation refers to the intensity of the color; and lightness refers to the brightness of the color.

Also, I am wondering if the difficulty I had connecting to the story was more from the fact that it has been translated from the original Dutch, versus the actual story itself.

The greats of fiction Stephen King and George R. R. Martin lead the fanfare for HEX, so be assured that Thomas Olde Heuvelt’s debut English novel is both terrifying and unputdownable in equal measure. Griselda is a tragic figure, abused by her alcoholic ex-husband and bringing up a child by herself in a situation in which everyone knows her name and circumstances, she has more down to earth things to deal with than the supernatural. As an outsider herself it is not surprising that she begins to relate to and idolise the Witch. Together with the cast of families and supporting characters, Olde Heuvelt builds up a familiar picture of a believable community. This makes the reader invested in their fates, and makes their descent into madness and destruction all the more horrifying.

BUT, here's the problem with this book. I liked no one in this book, the descriptions got a bit too wordy and I lost some of the scare factor at the end. I was just happy that the town burned to hell and everyone died. Does this make me a bad person?! Other cast include Zaynah Ahmed, Marc Akinfolarin, Christopher Akrill, Sabrina Aloueche, Sonya Cullingford, Ben Goffe, Chris Jenkins, Kalisha Johnson, Amanda Lindgren, Michael Matus, Kody Mortimer, Neïma Naouri, Mark Oxtoby, Aharon Rayner, Olivia Saunders, Sasha Shadid, Rumi Sutton and Riley Woodford. I wasn't expecting this book to be so heartwrenching; there were several passages that were hard to read and others that made my blood boil.

As in so many fairy tales, the cruelest part is often overlooked. It’s not the depravity of the witch, but the mourning of the poor woodcutter over the loss of his children. Damn! This book had so much promise with a creepy plot and the writing was very atmospheric at times. a b c "Het beHEXte jaar van Thomas Olde Heuvelt". Omroep Gelderland (in Dutch) . Retrieved 2016-10-30.

Jenni is an award winning, critically acclaimed poet and novelist. She is published in eight languages. A Granta Best of Young British Novelist (once-in-a-decade-accolade), Scottish Novelist of the Year (2016), Pushchart nominated, on lists for BBC International Short Story Prize, Impac Dublin, The Sunday Times Short Story Award, Encore, among others. it’s not a perfect book - again, the characters are just there to move the plot along, there’s a sexual assault in the jail that seems unlikely and gratuitous, and it doesn’t quite commit to exploring all the doors of its own reveal, but it’s winky-clever and surprising and it just explodes into smalltown mass-panic chaos at the end like stephen king writing salem directed by michael bay. This was a really unique take on a haunting. I enjoyed that aspect of the story so much, as well as the way the town dealt with the issue of the haunting.
